Gps Fishfinders and Google Earth
I am just wondering since I dont have a boat yet. I wonder if a guy could take some GPS Coordinates from Google Earth and program them into a GPS Fishfinder ? I have zoomed into alot of the lakes I fish and can actually see alot of creek channels that I didnt know where there before. Can this be done ?

If you have the actual coordinates, yes, you can enter them into the GPS, if it's a mapping unit, it will show you that area, which you can then mark as a waypoint. What GPS unit? Lowrance offers free lake maps on their site. check here, they update often if they don't have any in your area

I am lucky that Google Earth pictures are when my lake was very low so I can see various structure. I have taken those Google Earth coordinates and plug them in my cheap little eTrex unit and go right to them. Have also taken way points of where I am catching fish then go to Google Earth and see why, wash, creek, other structure.
Just have to watch coordinate formats, you may need to change options in GPS or convert degree's/minutes to degrees in hundredths. |

Laser if you don't have a GPS that supports the maps DAM pointed you to at Lowrance you can download one of their Emulators then download the map and look at it on your PC via the emulator.

Something I came across couple of days ago is GPSBabel. It allows you to upload/download waypoints, routes and tracks between PC/GoogleEarth and GPS. While many of the more expensive mapping GPS's have the capability to work between GPS and their mapping software, this supports GPS units that don't have PC software interface. I was able to download my waypoints on my cheapo Garmin eTrex and GoogleEarth with no problems. Would also let me do the reverse if I needed to.
If looking for a PC/GoogleEarth interface for a PC this is a cheap (free) some4what basic way to get it done. Gives me a way to backup my GPS Waypoints and will allow me to load them on new Lowrance H2O I have on order. |
