Ice in live wells
When fishing in water above 80 degrees make sure that you put ice in the water of your live wells. Ensure that your livewells are ready to go first thing in the morn. I.e full of water, chemicals added, areators on manual. The water will cool appx. 10 degrees when on ice. Don't add ice from a cooler etc.. This water contans chlorine.
(The chemicals are "rejuvinate", or "please release me"). Don't allow fish to lay on the deck, this can remove the slime and the fish may become less able to reduce items like parasites, and other infections after being released. Handle your fish with care this reduces stress. Don't worry about the water being "sloshed" around when running, the water will still remain cool. After appx. 3 hrs. remove appx. half of the water and replenish with new fresh water. This will reduce stress as well as add oxygen, therefore allowing the fish to stay healthy. Ensure that when weighing in your fish that they are handled with care by the weigh masters. These are just a few idems mentioned that may help to reduce delayed mortality.

They are "good eats". Had some die on me last summer, when the water was 85+. Took these fish home and put the knife to these baby's.

I have a question about the livewell chemicals. What do they do? Why do you use them? I've heard some stuff about them but not much.

Wet your hands before handling fish. Prevents the protective slime on the fish from being removed.
Zooker's frozen bottles of water prevent the chlorine from entering the livewell water and killing the fish. Good idea. Good post, bassman. Good fishing, Mac |

Livewell aditives have chemicals to maintain the slime coat on fish, a antibiotic to treat wounds and a stress reliever to calm the fish until released. ("Fishie Downers") ZOOKERS idea is great for cooling your livewell. I fill 4 half gallon milk jugs with water and freeze them solid, then put them in my boat cooler along with crushed ice to keep my drinking water and "cokes" cold. During the hot part of the tourney, I drop one of the frozen jugs into the livewell (provided I have caught keeper fish by then) and change it out for a frozen one when the first one has melted. (I attached an aquarium thermometer inside my livewell to keep track of the water temperature.) The recirculating pump will jet water into the livewell under pressure to help oxygenate the water, eliminating the need to add more lake water for oxygen. JackL
