All mono has about 25% stretch rate. So if you have 100ft. behind the boat it will stretch 25 feet to 125 feet behind the boat before it breaks.

[example in a trolling situation]

Stretch is inherent to mono. If you don't want stretch take a look at fluorocarbon and braid. Neither stretch much.

Braid stretches almost none. Thanks to braid, people have started to fish vertical about 800ft down with only a few inches of stretch in the line.

the myth that flouro doesn't stretch has been proven to be false.it has as much stretch as mono.

Sometimes stretch is good, especially w/ crankbaits. I only use braid, I've learned to give myself a little hesitation with certain lures before setting the hook. Plus w/ braid you can feel every drop and bump.

Yes sir! Dodge is correct!

Here is some more information that a guy who is known in some places as Fishing Elbow put together. He is also the author of Baitcast 101. If you think that fluoro has little stretch, maybe relative to mono but not by much. Some fluoros have considerable stretch! Kudos and much thanks to Fishing Elbow for his excellent work!

that's becuase the line makers have brainwashed most fishermen into thinking flouro has less stretch.it is the least visible but less stretch is garbage.

They didn't lie you were just not informed correctly. I've always known that fluro has lots of stretch just from using it!

Thanks, zooker.

Fishing elbow put that together as a result of having a whole bunch of folks send some of the lines they used and he measured and tested the lines over last winter. Hats off to him. I think he might come up with another project for this winter. If he does and I learn of it, I'll let everyone here know.

I'll stick to my guns and say power pro is still the best line I have used for hook sets you don't have to pull as hard, and you barley feel or don't feel the stretch at all. I used mono a bit this summer for my spinner bait rod and I was so used to using power pro I missed a few good opportunity's on big fish due to the stretch in the line! and also the color of the line of power pro up here the fish have a hard time seeing it, it blends quite well. And my most famous saying is "YOU COULD PULL JIMMY HOFFA OF THE BOTTOM OF THE LAKE WITH THIS STUFF" yes its that strong!

Robby, Does a rod manufacturer rate their rods for braided line ?I haven't seen a bass rod rated for 50 lb test line. The reel manufacturers doesn't rate their products to be used with braided lines on the size reels we use.Why ? because its overkill. P N J

yes it's overkill but we use 65 and 50 lb test braid for reasons other than the strength.the thicker line doesn't dig.also if use use the same diameter as you would if you used a mono line the lures run approx the same depth as if you were running mono.an example would be a lot of guys run 17 to 20 lb test mono to keep spinnerbaits up in the water column.i run 65/16 sufix to get the same results.also the thicker the braid the better it performs on rocks.i run deep cranks over rip rap all day long on 65 sufix and only retie at the end of the day.

Interesting info about fluoro-I didn't think it stretched near as much as it does.

ib-fishing elbow is a good guy-if he ever gets out of the Great White North he has a standing invite to come down and go fishing.

reb,

he sure is a good guy. He's got the same invite if he ever comes to the seattle area.

pnj,

I saw in the shimano rod catalog that some of the crucial rods had a mono rating and a braid rating. I have not seen any others do it.
