I've been busy dressing up a ton of buzzbaits and spinnerbaits, and started checking for hook sharpness on everything I bought, and was really surprised to see the booyah blades I bought had really dull hooks...it only took a few swipes with the file to get them "sticky" sharp, but it kinda took me off guard that they sell them right out of the box, not as sharp as they should be..
on a side note, I bought a handfull of bomber model A's and found a neat one that was purple and white, with some really crappy hooks, kinda like a ratLtrap aluminum looking hook, then on the exact same model A in a dif color they had really sharp hooks. not sure of the brand but they were as sharp as excaliburs..wonder what makes the dif what hook gets what..they both are same size n bill, just dif color..I wonder if they are assembled in dif plants? If you're out there buying tackle and need a good all around crankbait, the bomber in crawdad is a keeper...better get 2!~~

JB, interesting that you mention the different hooks. Last week I picked up a couple Bombers myself. One crank had what appeared to be excaliburs, the other had hooks that seem to match up with some of my old deep sea lures (kinda like a silver matte finish and long).

Anyway, that brings me back to my anal-retentive hook issues. After I get the cranks out of the box, I start wondering, do I replace or not replace? Then, if I decide to replace, I start thinkin', what size?

I get bombers in the store that are put together in different countries. also i have seen the gray looking "saltwater" hooks mixed with the brown "saltwater" hooks on the same lure. Many times the saltwater and fresh water lures are mixed together in the same alise. I have some part time employees who would always mix these lures up. They could not tell the difference. I change most of my hooks on all lures so I never noticed the sharpness of these hooks.
I find that if I replace the back trebel with a single, I hang up less

And by the way, what is up with the saltwater hooks on the Bombers. Are people really using these cranks in saltwater?

Any of you guys change the hooks soon as you get a new crankbait?Just
wondering.Also how many of you guys beleive the whole red hook thing turning the fish on.......I dont know.Still not real sold on the whole bleeding bait thing either.But I did buy 3 strikeKing bleeding buzzbaits at BPS over the weekend.I really liked the rubber weed guard infront of the prop to keep it from binding up. What cha think?

I don't usually change the hooks, but I ALWAYS check the hooks and if they need it sharpen them.

If y'all don't have one, do yourself a favor-next time you are in WalMart or someplace that sells tackle get yourself a hook sharpener of some kind.

jb if you bought a booyah spinner bait you got screwed. i belive it has something to do with the head/wire angle on them baits. but they hit wood-logs,limbs,brushpile,stumps,ect..-they turn into the wood hanging up... the hooks are crappy and will dull very quickly..on my not to buy list for sure..

agreed, at least with the Booyah spinner I don't like the geometry but I do like their jigs.

I throw 3/8 and have a hand full of smaller 1/4ounce



On a personal side note, I found out years ago about the flat bottom lead on a buzzbait, I think they ride to the top better than a bullet style leadhead.
I always try to feather the spool and lift the rod tip just as the buzzbait hits the water, trying to get it moving as soon as it hits the water, instead of letting it sink a few seconds with a big splash..

you should replace the silver hooks they are made out of a vary soft metal i broke one in my hands today

Agree with JB about flat heads on buzzbaits as opposed to bullet style heads. With the bullet style you have to reel like crazy to get it to the surface once it lands in the water. The flat heads plane to the surface and can also be retrieved at slower speeds.

From what I've seen, the silver hooks go on the more shad color baits and the bronze on fire tigers, chartreuse, and craw baits bomber makes. Bomber either was just bought or bought or merged with "excalibur" so I think the new bomber (not bought in the orange packaging) will have the the better hooks. It doesn't matter which bombers I bought (which hooks they had on, the bronze or the steel) the hooks generally suck and I replace them all with gamkatsu's."I haven't bought any of the "new" Bombers since they came out with their "new" look. The baits don't looks the same as they used to. I have 6 to 10 each in each of the basic productive color patterns that I bought back in the early '90's.

as long as I can keep the lead attached to the wire and can keep touching up the hook point, I am good to go(as they say in those taco bell commercials..hand gesture n all)
I just look at the blade combos and weight of spinner baits, I can always change the skirt, but every angler needs a variety of blades, sizes and colors and metal finishes,, I really like a hammered nickle willow leaf blade,
and also some of the painted blades to..its nice to see them work after the day in and day out throwing a Colorado blade, or willow n col. combo..
Best thing I can tell beginners is to make the skirt "pulse"...by a quick stoping of the reel or moving your rod tip to wards the bait a sec to get the skirt to move..its a deadly trick..an so easy.
I also love to just work over a tree by flipping or pitching the blade and let it flutter down, esp. a single Colorado blade ...

you can make the bottum of the bullet style buzz baits flat with a file and just touch up the paint
