Default 3/31/07 Joey's Lake

Well, I went to the same lake that I went to last sunday where I caught that big bass. I didn't get any bites, but I spotted two midsized bass from shore. I didn't catch them.

There was a strong wind and some rain. COLD.
I couldn't catch any, so I decided to try something new. The wind blew a bunch of matted grass to only one spot on the pond. I casted my worm onto it. I was slowly reeling across. I anticipated a bass biting the worm right after it fell into the water. Right before it reached the end of the matted grass. BAM! My first topwater bass. A 18"x14" 3lb9oz bass! My first topwater bass on a weighted worm! I also came back to that spot later and had a fish that had to be 6lbs on my line. It was pulling drag like CRAZY! I also had another on, but he came off.

Question : When do bass usually hide under the thick matted grass?

well they can hide under grass when ambushing prey, when the sun is high and hot(cooler under there) when the water is muddy (needing to relate to cover) bass can be found in matted grass alot. I would definitly keep checking there regularly!

Cool. I don't' understand why he, and many others, were under there. It was cold and windy. This is actually the first bass I've caught from this pond.

That is a easy pattern to remember. plus look for the shady side of isolated mat/pads/vegetation, and flip to it, many times the bass will be under the more shady side waiting to ambush some prey.

if the water temps are cold and the sun is out flip it under the weeds it acts as a heater
