Default Finish On Your Boat

question, what do you all use to get shine back into finish that is weathered on top edge of your boat..

i tried compound, made it worst..tried wax, no good..tried scarcth remover, no good..

the gel coat is real dull..if i put water on it, it shines real nice until it dries..

any suggestions on how to get real clear shine back on that edge..thanks

I've never heard of that gel coat product, but would be interested in hearing first hand reports about it......

We used this product on our 28ft. boat pictured below, http://www.marinestore.com/vertglas....44490138148303

It requires a little work but once done it looks great and then you only needed to reapply every 6 months to a year.

Default Penetrol

i heard about this product today so i went to hardware store and it was on sale for 5 dollars a quart..it is called PENETROL..you use it to thin varnish and oil paints..

it went on real easy and gave a shine back to the gel coat..no rubbing ,just wipe it on..

cant tell yet how long it lasts but i hear that it does for 6 months to year..

i used 1 oz only with 2 coats on top edge all around my nitro..you have to leave it dry for 24 hrs..

so far, its real nice, what a difference it made..

anyone else ever use this stuff?

Guys, i took my boat (17' skeeter) to the local fiberglass repair shop. They patched a few chips in the hull, clear coated, buffed, re-carpeted my trailor, and replaced the carpet in the floor (not on the decks). All for $300 bucks. Looks brand new. I think it's well worth that and as long as i keep it waxed and covered it will last for years.

PENETROL is a product for thinning varnish and oil paint..

not same as clear coat ..

no, you dont have to wet sand finish unless you think it will improve your shine..i used mineral spirits to remove my old boat wax before i used the PENETROL..

you wipe it on full strength with a LINT FREE rag or sponge brush..i used sponge brush, you wait 5 minutes then wipe it off with lint free rag.

i put 2 coats on and let it dry for 24 hrs..

dont put on a thick coat ,use 2 thin coats ..

what a difference it made, so far..quart can will last many years..

i poured it in plastic cup not from can..you dont want to spill this on stuff as its real hard when dry to get off..

I read about penetrol a few months back, but have been in/out of tourneys for the past few weeks and have had no time to apply this stuff..until now...I slapped on two coats, I did the first coat almost too lightly and after it dried it was a little spotty in places...however after the second coat (which I applied generously) the difference is freakin' amazing! I've used a ton of other chemicals to bring back the sun-faded fiberglass with little or no result, but this penetrol stuff is great! I would recommend not buffing it after the five minutes of drying as indicated on the can. Instead I applied it with a rag, let it sit for 24 hours and re-apply a second coat the same way. I will try to get some before/after photos posted on here today.

Well,

I see that Vertglass has had some decent reviews after doing a google search.. I have also come across before and after pictures in RV.net of the Presto brand rejuvinator:
http://www.prestopro.com/store/

Apparently Powerboat Reports who supposedly does independent testing, found Poli Glow www.poliglowproducts.com to be the best fiberglass hull restorer. The report is in the Jan 2007 issue.
