Default Jig Modifications

Anybody have any good techniques to finesse a standard sized jig/skirt?

Trimming skirt? How far is too far?

Trimming weed guard? How much is too much?

Removing strands? How many is too many?

Any other techniques out there?

Tony

For a finesse jig, I normally go with a 3/16 grass style or a 1/8 or 1/4 football. I trim the skirts to about a 1/4" behind the hook for a lot of flair. I put single cable weedguards in all my finesse jigs and make skirts with 40 strands.

Here's a couple of my finesse 3/16 grass jigs.

i like round head jigs 1/4 oz or less... i cut the strands above the band really short to make a collar around teh jig head (jewel spider jig style).. then cut the skirt bleow the band to a 1/8" past teh hook. Trim the weedguard til it is angled and even with teh hook (i actually prefer single wire weed guards on finesse jigs)... and i use jewel eakins craws as trailers...

if you wish to purchase some ready to go... Jewel Spider JIgs come out of teh package kickin arse...

Is there a good way to trim the skirt when its been hand tied and the skirt is only in 1 direction? These hand tied jigs have the skirt coming above the band only, not below it.

I only trim the backs, when the skirt comes out the front, I'd leave it. I think you'd want some overhang. If interested, send me an e mail with you address and I'll send you a jig to try.

Some prefer to trim in an irregular fashion making the skirt uneven and thinking that makes a more natural look, this goes along with a friend who often fishes tubes and trims the tentacles in an uneven manner.

Other fellows trim in a generally rounded fashion behind the hook a quarter inch or so, rounding in an arc shaped cut to somewhat mimic the curve of the hook, using a much wider sweep, (more gradual) than the hook bend itself. Just my two cents, I like the idea of the irregular cut, but still generally like the appearance of the arc as well.....cutting roughly and still getting the arc impression overall, somewhat like the pictures shown above in Dominic's post, particular the green jig in the top picture.
