Blue Angels and the Thundrebirds are awesome. As a pilot, getting a ride along with these guys tops my lists of dreams...

I was very fortunate 2 or 3 years ago to be fishing on a lake right beside an airfield where they were performing. Their show was probably the most spectacular thing I have ever seen. Really, it took my breath away to see what those guys do. If you ever get the chance to see them, DO IT!
Pics didn't turn out too good since I only had my camera phone: They were a lot closer than it looks in the pics. And being on the lake I had a great, unobstructed view of a lot of the show. |

About 25 tears ago, while at college in Terre Haute, a buddy and I managed to get some local guy to fish his private pond with his little rowboat. It was in some thick woods, with the trees basically forming canyons, and the clear sky just narrow slits above.
Well, Crane Naval Base just so happens to be really close. I did not know that at the time. Between the trees sound dampening effect, and their high rate of speed, we never heard the F4 Phantoms until they flew overhead at about 500 feet. How I didn't fall in the lake, I will never know. I hit the deck like someone had tossed a live grenade.

I hate I missed this today. We had planned on taking the boys, but Flea got sick last night and we held off. Maybe next time.

The base that I work on hosts an AirShow each October.
http://www.miramarairshow.com/ It is exciting to watch them perform. The most excitment though is when they are first practicing at at El Centro. This is where they are learning the formations and it can be quite nerve racking when they have not quite mastered the techniques. Last year both the Blue Angels and the Snow Birds (Canadian Air Force) performed here.
