cranking this time of year
I went out today and caught just a couple of bass on a 2 inch, 5' diving bluegill-resembling crankbait, just cranking and stopping around some structure me and my buddies put out one night (utility carts 10ft under) off a point.
2 small fish are pretty disappointing, but it's a start, cause being the plastic lizard/creature man that I am, I completely ditched any cranking whatsoever what crankbait tactics have brought you the luck this fall?! sp

Smokey Joe colored trap over grass flats. Caught 2 this morning with that bait.

I usually start with a spinnerbait in the early morning and switch to a crankbait once the sun starts to clear the trees, say about mid morning. I use a med - deep diving crank in about 12 foot of water around submerged weedbeds. This has been a good producer for me in the fall. I don't have a particular crank that I prefer. I just start with something that I feel confident with that dives to the correct depth. A number 9 Rapalla Shad Rap in perch color is one of my favorites. I will always have both a deep and medium diver rigged at all times to work both depth ranges as I work the area. I have a medium diving Cabellas brand crankbait that is gold with a black back that has caught probably more bass for me as far as crank baits are concerned than any crank in my box. This time of year, it is crucial to find submerged weedbeds that are still green and healthy looking. Thats where the bass will be. Especially if they are located near a deep drop off or on a deeper point.

At this point, get a mid-range crank selection and start fishing them. You'll never be a crank fisherman if you just throw worms all day!

we don't have any weed beds on my lake, unfortunately...
this lake is horrible, water is pretty clear, but no rip rap or weed beds are around... just a stump here and there and some brush in shallow water. we do have some points near deep water and the upper part of the lake is a 3ft flat... the dam happens to be the least productive (ironically), maybe because 1.) all the big fish are there and are playing hard to get or 2.) fish are not active or not present there, because of the colder, deeper water with almost no structure but a floating dock. is there a way to plant weeds into this thing?? this lake knows big bass, because it lacks the best bass cover and food sources: WEEDS AND ROCKS sp

Our lake finnally cleared up enough to think about throwing something with trebles and a cheap renegade purple chrome 2-4' minnow was the ticket yesterday evening. I never had much luck with them before and it werent nothing to write home about but Hopefully this will be more than a senko and lizards winter.

shopping carts? I do pretty good this time of year on a yo-zuri crystal minnow, or any other type of jerkbait.

cranks
i used a rocket shad today, had success, a white mouse, and poppers. first time i used a rocket shad, give it a try. u may be surprised. one of the bass i caught had a three inch minnow in its gullet, and it still managed to hit the white mouse on top water. u know what they say, big baits, big fish. well, big baits, smaller fish too. (it was about 13 inches the LM bass). heck, just throw anything out there. something is bound to work.
