Bait Monkey Question
This started as a water cooler conversation in the office today, but I was curious what you guys thought.
Based on the assumption that you had all the gear you needed, and now had some extra cash, what would you want to get with $50 and/or $100. The main item listed at work was BBZ's and other swim baits. One guy said he will always need hooks, line, and worms. Just figured I would throw it out there for opinions

Gas for the truck to pull the boat. (our boat is pretty fuel efficient, unlike the truck)
Tackle wise, if we're assuming I have all the gear I need, I'd get terminal tackle: Hooks, line, weights, etc. Or plastics, cause they run out too. BB

umm better start saving now for the bait monkey attacks after jan 1 09. i have seen the pricing chart for zoom plastics for next year. though i can NOT say what it is at this time. all i can say is double digits per pack....
think about it.. zooker

I was thinking about this today as a passed the BPS in Sevierville. We are all bait junkies. We all buy the latest and greatest in excess even though we are catching plenty of fish on what we have. You know this is very true, The fish dont care. Most of what we have in our boats and tackle boxes was made for fishermen not fish.
Over the last 30 to 40 years I have accumulated so much stuff that I dont even know what I have. Ten years ago my wife made me build a man cave just for my stuff. Thursday night while preparing to go fishing I found a tupperware box full of plastic bait still not opened that I have had for years and forgotten. The bait Monkey is a drug. We as Bassin Guys are addicted. It's like as soon as we enter the BPS or Gander or what ever store you like we get a highten sence of pleasure that is culminated and climaxed with a purchase of something that we really dont need. When I get right down to it I catch fish basically on the same baits today I did 30 years ago. They may be fancier or prettier or promise to do this or that but very little that is really new has come about in the last 25 to 30 years. We are trying to fool the fish into thinking that something artifical is actually something real and in the process we are getting fooled. My name is Fish2win and I am a bait addict. whats the difference? Fish2win

Take your wife or girlfriend out for a nice dinner so you won't have to put up with whining next time you want to hit the lake!

Beer.
OK, ok, I'll really play along. I guess I would get some AC Shiner 350s. I really don't feel like I am too low on tackle, I mean I could easily pick up odds and ends, but the monkey doesnt have too good a hold on me right now.

The BaitMonkey works in several ways, in my case it has learned to wait until my wallet is thick enough to blow it on something expensive or somethings expensive better. That is called evolution. |

I'd buy some inexpensive rod and reel combos and more terminal tackle so I would always have enough inexpensive gear to share with neighborhood kids and friends...

Since I just recently got back into fishing after several years off, I guess the bait monkey is alive and kicking for me. The nearest BPS is about 75 miles one way and the nearest cabella's would require a plane ticket. I spend a lot of time looking online, then reading reviews, and looking up the bait on youtube. It is easy for me to fight the monkey in wal-mart and sports authority, but it gets much harder if I end up somewhere that has a real store. I agree with gas being a needed item and I always keep my eye open on terminal tackle. Lately I have been getting the swimbait itch. Problem is that the $30 dollars in lures ends up meaning an upgrade on my gear. Curse you bait monkey

I've got everything I want and need and then some. I guess if you forced me to spend $100, I'd buy jigs and Beavers.

put the 50-100 in a "kitty" towards newer better electronics. it's so easty to accumulate stuff $20-$30 at a time, but those big ticket items are hard to do and not cause a problem.

A new rod since a friend of mine just broke my favorite spinning rod. It was the Abu Garcia setup I had. This was the rod that I used about 95% of the time. I am sad right now because it was partly my fault. I can still use the rod though because it broke only 2 eyelets down (about 8 inches broke off). It just became a flipping stick.

BBZ-1..... Cough Cough Cough RIPOFF! Dont get me started on that bait! Please do yourself a favor and dont buy that swimbait. Try a 3:16 or another hard plastic swimbait but DO NOT buy a BBZ!

I'd pick up some odds and ends. Need a couple more Flippin wts, some 20lb Flouro, and a pack of hooks or two. I'm in good shape right now. Monkey is off the back.

funny you brought this up,lol. see..... while visiting the wife this weekend, today we went "shopping" and out to eat (outback,MMMM), well i saw an acadamy sports store. GOT THE HYDRYLA HACKER FINALLY!!! HA HAHA. and just as i was looking at all the lures and worms, i was telling myself that i really didn't need anything now. but the monkey was really getting down on me cause i had not bought anything for a few weeks, i was really pissing him off actually, lmao. well i remember that i wanted to get some cotton candy worms, when the little woman saved me. called me on the cell and said that she really needed to get back cause she was feeling real tired and needed to go lay down in her little townhouse room. that was all i needed to hear. off like a streak of ligthing i went. swooped her in the truck and off to the room. TAKE THAT MONKEY!!! just goes to show you that a wife is stronger than a monkey. well almost..see i DID buy the hacker for the troller. oh well...hope the bm is happy for a while now.

Bamabassman... I was in Prattville this weekend, just 4 miles from the BPS down there. I was able to hold off the bait monkey too. It was tough because everyone that was at the anniversary party that I was there to attend went to BPS after the party was over. I had some help with holding off the monkey though. The wife and two kids were in the car and it was 8 pm.

"While visiting the wife"....zackly what kinda visit was that? <never mind>
I also just recently got back into fishing and so far it's been less like fishing and more like standing on the bank looking foolish. I keep going, but the critters are just toying with my emotions! But the bait monkey is a GD bait gorilla. The nearest BPS is a long ways away and Dick's is even out of the way, so I frequent WM. I've invested in a bunch of stuff, but nothing is paying any dividends so far - about the only thing I can say is my casting is getting really good...but no matter how a vary the retrieve, the fish just toy with me - oh, I've caught a couple, but mostly just little guys. Anyway, there's always more 'stuff'... TT, spinners, cranks, jerks, plastics....I've just begun to feed the bait gorilla! hehe |

I would explore the handmade balsa and hand poured stuff more. Some of these regional unknown handmade baits really catch fish!
