Default The Devil`s Horse???

few questions for any old timers who have used these wierdo gadget looking lures.
first question is do they work? What type of time of day to use them, I`m guessing evening top water. And how do you retrieve them?
Thanks

anytime you are seeing surface activity is a good time to throw it, mornings and evenings are good too. i like a jerk jerk pause rythem but allow the fish to tell you what they want.

{does fred sanford} OH!.. OH!...oldtimers??

they are basicly a prop top water bait to use toss in the water and work like a pop-r. bending the blades FOWARD makes it move much less per yank..-it stays in the strike zone longer-it works great at night or in low light..

these baits are definatly NOT a gadget lures they work as well if not better than a buzzbait and or a spook..

I like throwing these in clear water lakes. If you find the edge of a deep weed line this would be my lure of choice. I've had bass come up as far as fifty feet to have a round with a Devil's Horse.

Guess we are old timers, Zooker. That is a great topwater bait. I need to put mine in the boat. Thanks for the reminder!

Thanks for the advice guys. Pulling the blades forwards drove them nuts last night. Big fish would grab it sideways though and the hooks were not even touching thier mouths but man I have new faith in this lure now. They love the blades pulled forwards.
One question. How far back does this lure go? I was told the early part of the 50`s it came out. I have a reproduction and a really old beat up one.

Hmmmmmmmm............I know I am an old timer nut you better get on the bandwagon and figure out when to use these WONDERFUL big bass baits. They have accounted for MANY MANY big bass in my travels as well as other peoples travels. I'll clue you into the trick of the Devils Horse...........think finesse and slow and then SWOOSH and then slow and fineese......GET THE PICTURE!

So are we talking about a Stallion, maybe a Mustang? I've always pictured him riding a pony.

Here's some more Tricks with the horse. SLIGTHLY bend the props rearward so that they make a swoosh swoosh sound and CHANGE THOSE HOOKS. SUBTLE is the key word here. I have scored MANY MANY large fish with the horse. After the water warms up to say 65 it stays tied on my topwater rod. MANY MANY times I have gotten in the right area during midday hours and scored a big fish with the horse. Remeber after u cast it let ALL THE rings diappear. then twitch then swoosh swoosh. Then let things settle down again. I have caught alot of fish because I dont get in a hurry with this bait.

I actually have 2 favs. One being the yellow with black stripes and the other is a bluegill color which nowadays is getting hard to find. I promise you if you use these 2 colors especially on calm days around weed edges, stumps etc... you will get bit. But I again wanna stress the horse is a big bait and SUBTLE slow movements with the occasional SWOOSH SWOOSH really does wonders.

The last time I used one was 15 years ago. Caught a bluegill. Never used it again.
