hooks on crankbaits
switching hooks on crankbaits
I've been using shallow running crankbaits for a few weeks and hammering the fish. Switched from a strike king to a bomber and gettin a ton of bites, but they come out of the water they throw the bomber crankbait ( about 15 last night). I do the best I can at keeping them in the water, but the big ones come out anyway. Do any of you switch hooks when you open a new crankbait and if so do you go up a size or what brand do you switch to. The reason I switched was color. I don't want to say what color, but it was rootbeer. That slipped out. The strike king sexy shad didn't get thrown, but a lot less bites. I'm going to switch some hooks but I'm going to wait till I hear from you guys. THANKS BCKLASH

I hardly ever change hooks new out of the package, unless they really suck. I always go with the same size that's on the crank. some of the best hook are Gammy or Owner, but if you don't want to spend that much, get VMC hooks. They're what I use most of the time because if they're good enough for Rapala, they're good enough for me.
If you're using any bandit cranks, Zooker suggests replacing the rear treble with the same size, but a normal shank hook, not the short shank. BB

Waffle, You need to get yourself a lure retriever. Sure, it's not the first thing that comes to mind when you're got 15 bucks burning a hole in your pocket, but it pays for itself very quickly. I bought one of the ridiculous looking Bill Dance ones, and I have already saved about $30 worth of my cranks.

if you throw a crank from shore or from a boat you need one of these.. http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/te...004&hasJS=true even a cheap bait lost will add up..rat trarps are what $5 each save your bait 4 times. this thing has paid for it self.... i keep 3 in the boat cause lucky craft cranks cost out the but... zooker

As for preventing jumps, I try to keep tenion in the line throughout the entire fight.

I forgot to mention, a cranking stick with a moderate action will also help keep fish on the the cranks. And when they go to jump, point your rod down and crank fast. sometimes it'll keep them from jumping, or they won't get a good jump.

bcklash,
every crankbait i buy gets mustad triple grips put on it before it even goes in my box. i have a ton of faith in these hooks and with the investment you have already made by buying a crankbait there is no reason to skimp on the hooks.

I love the VMC sureset hooks. I love old Poe's cedar cranks, especially the 300 series, but the problem is that I find is that usually they were made at least a few years ago and I replace em with a #4 size VMC sureset and they work great.
