Default Outboard "Hiccupping"

Don't know if I got that term right or not. Maybe someone can give me an idea of what to check.

I have a 73 Johnson 20HP tiller handle; the last few times that I have taken my baby out the motor doesnt seem to want to run as smooth as she can. It seems to what I call "hiccup" while running; some people may call it sneezing. I have had the carb rebuilt, changed the plugs and wires along with rebuilding the armature plate. I have put new gas in it the last 3 trips out, so I know it isn't the fuel. Any other ideas of what to check on this thing?

Probably wouldn't hurt to run some Seafoam through the tank, either. I'll clean the crud out.

I have checked the hose and primer bulb; there are no cracks or leaks. I just bought it 2 years ago and it still looks brand new.

Where can I get some sea foam, any marina??

Ok this may sound a little odd but get your carb cleaner out and spray the base of the carb while running and listen for it to choke out/sputter.

If it does you have a vacume leak.. Easy fix is new gaskets and good clean mate surface.

You can get Sea Foam at NAPA, AutoZone and other automotive part stores. I'd imagine Marina's carry it as well but you'll probably pay a lot more for it.

Hiccuping on them thar SLOMC's is due to a very very small orifice in the carb being plugged. It is a idle orfice that has to be open otherwise it is actually starving for air at certain times of the cycle. MOST of the time a REAL good dosing of good ole Carb Cleaner spray and a good dose of Seafoam will cure it. If it doesnt ya gonna have to pickup a crab kit and rebuild her. 4.95 for Seafoam and 1.00 can of carb cleaner is the firsat thing to do though.
