Has anyone here tried it? Results?

I tried it many years ago using poppers with decent results in spring time in some nearby gravel pits.

It’s only worth mentioning but I am not sure if you know I am in the process of going full time pro. I am fishing more as a result and probably to everyone’s surprise, Scott Martin fly fishiness for bass. I spent 3 days with him recently (I am working on a sponsor package that put us together) and he was saying he used to walk the edges of ponds and fly fish for bass. I have also been on a boat with a paid guide years ago that had fly fishing equipment on board. But with all of that said, I have tried from time to time but honestly never was in what I would say the right situation to top fish for bass with a fly rod. I do have two rigs and through the fly in some of the mountain springs but not very good at it. I want to try it more. Thanks for posting the thread as it makes me think about it more and hopefully makes me try it more.

I am going to my cousin's pond tomorrow and carrying a flyrod for up in the day. I will tie on a decent sized bug and probably catch bass & bream. Largest bass I have caught on a flyrod weighed a little over 3 pounds. A lot of fun when they are cooperating.

I have taken plenty of pan fish on my fly rod, but never a bass. I like this idea of trying a popper though. Never thought of that.

Now you've gone and done it. Capt Mike will be posting pics of bass caught on hair poppers for the rest of the summer!!!

Check the archives for pics. Capt posts all kinds of popper bass every summer.

I thought you would have noticed by now but Capt has all those bass named, numbered, cataloged and hand fed. They know when he's coming so they just throw themselves at the boat. It's true...I've seen it.

It's been a while but I have caught bass on poppers. Matter of fact I was hoping to see Uncle Walt over the winter and get a couple more from him. Seems that Walt is no longer making his poppers any more. He's retired after fifty years of making 40 to 50 thousand each year.

Absolutely! I fish with a guy on occasion that ONLY uses a fly rod. I've seen him catch both LM and SM on a variety of flies, poppers and jigs with it.

I own a fly rod, and on occasion I don't mind taking it out now and again.

What size rod do you guys use? I broke a 7 wt at seminole 2 months ago, so my only fly rod is now a 5/6 wt rod I have used for trout and smallmouth. I want to get another fly rod at some point, but can't decide between a 7 or an 8 wt when I do. I might use it for some other large fish as well.

If you think you are going for larger fish too go for the 8 weight.

8 wt minimum for big hair bugs.. I have had guys with 10 wts,,, to really get back in the woods.

Short 20 lb leaders and a perfection loop always.
