Advice on a spinning rod
I plan to buy a 2 piece spinning rod to go with a Shimano Saros reel. This needs to be a more or less all purpose rod for northern Ontario waters - smallies, wallies and pike (oh my!) I have been considering 3 alternatives: The Fenwick HMG, the Shimano Compre and the GLoomis SJR783-2 GL3 (although at $275 it is probably more than I want to spend on spinning rod.) If you have used 1 or more of these rods I'd be interested in your feedback or if you think there is another rod I should be considering I'd like to hear about that too. Thanks.

Oh boy doc, you just opened up can of worms!!! Those are all high quality rods. If you use the search feature you will probably find all of those rod discussed in detail.... I think you should by all 3

I have a Fenwick HMG (one piece), medium power, fast action, that I've been pleased with. My personal tastes are such that I don't have brand loyalty when it comes to rods. If it has the action and power that I want, as well as other things that are important to me, I'll buy it if the price is in my range.
I've considered for years that M or MH rods are excellent all-purpose sticks.

I have and use a 2 piece MH shimano compre rod as my trunk rod. I cannot think of a rod of its caliber at its price that is a 2 piece.
It has even been used to catch both pink and silver salmon. It ought to stand up to an average pike. Look no further. It is as close to all purpose as it gets. I have employed many different methods, from drop shot, to crank and jerk bait, inline spinners, spoons, salmon stuff, jigs, etc.
