Default popper technique

whats the best technique for using a popper. i cant seem to get it to pop right without looking as fake as could be. what combo of reeling and action of the rod is best.

Some work better than others. Try a loop (Rapala) knot for better action.

Just try to get it to spit water, rest, lightly tug, tug, rest, spit.....

That's my type of retrieve. Try longer rests or bigger spits, shorter rests, lighter tugs, etc. Just have a little slack in the line and swing the rod down. KERSPLOOOSH!!!

There is no "best" way-it all depends on what the fish want. I've caught them working topwaters fast and caught them when it was sitting still. Just vary our retrieve and let the fish tell you what they want.

I agree with Rebbasser on this one. I personally use poppers fairly slow but let the fish tell you what they want, then key in on it.

I work them somewhat slow too. I'll twitch it... rest... twitch twitch... rest. I'll try a different retrieve till they hit it. I also tie a loop knot on my Pop-R's and Torpedo's.

Fast or so, its up to the fish to tell you what they want, I have used a popR for many many years and the guys that taught me really run them fast in the summer, chuggin, spittin', and side to side esp if the water is super clear.
On the river I use a clear rebel popR with the weighted ball in the back, and run it so they don't get a good look at it, but generally from early spring to about now I do a few pulls, leave some slack in my line, and reel as the popR moves....as everyone knows its one of my favorite lures.

im with rebasser, vary your retrieve, let the fish tell you what they want. this last weekend i was using a rapala popper, i was varying my retrieve but to no avail, right before i was gonna give up the popper i tried a really violent jerking motion with no pauses and bam a nice 3 pounder.

At first I vary retrieves. After a few blowups you can start figuring out the fish. If the fish come up and just kill the popper it usually means that they are in an aggressive mood and I'll fish it faster. If they just come up and just kind of suck in the bait I'll fish it slower. As far as rods I would go with a 6' 6" medium baitcasting combo with around a 5:3 gear ratio. I hope this helps.
