best thick cover baits.

i am using a medium/heavy shimano clarus rod with a quantum energy Pt with 40 pound power pro. i was wondering what were some effective thick cover baits for pitchin into holes in the pads. thanks!

Any Creature bait, any craw. My favorites are Brush Hog, Powerbait Beast, Powerbait power hog, chigger craws, and Rage Tail craws.

A jig, if the pads are thick use a heavy one. Don't forget to fish the top of the pads too, a plastic frog (spro, bobbys perfect) can't be overlooked.

don't forget to peg your weight, helps get that plastic through the muck.

I'm still gonna have to say my personal favorite, if the time of year is right.. is a lure like the Zara spook, but its completely weed less, hard to find cause i think its discontinued model, but its made by snag proof (i think) and its called a Weed demon, has a nice weight on the back end of it, and it gives it that side to side *walking the dog action* like the spook does, my 2nd bait id throw would be a strike king rage tail shad, or rage tail frog, the shad has more water disturbance than the frog, this bait is a must for me, got alot of big bass on it, and by saying big i mean 5+ pounds (thats huge for Illinois)

If the fish are under the mats of weeds and wont come up for anything, and had to work a bait more at there level in the water column like in or around the Thermocline id fish a Texas rigged Tube jig, pegged of course for that set-up id probably change to a leader using floro, depending on the type of weeds im pitching it into this would vary.

In really thick stuff the easiest bait for me to fish is a pegged T-rigged Flippin' Tube.

They do work very well , punch through about anything.

Also , just for the record , if you want the same idea of weight at the bottom , but not so big , you can use a drop shot weight the same way , I use them on my paca craws to keep the nose down instead of the normal pinchers up , just something differant for open skinny water.

For pitching into the thick nasty stuff, I'm throwing a 3/4-1 oz jig. MH 7' ft rod with a Daiwa TDA 150-A 6.3 to 1 gear ratio and spooled with 50 lb Power Pro. With this setup if I hook 'em, I got 'em.

Sometimes you got to go down through the the thick stuff to get them. 1oz + TT Flippin' Wt with a craw works and same with a 1oz + Grass jig and trailer.

i really like reaction innovations sweet beaver for flipping into heavy cover. around pads you can spray some attractant on the bait and it will slide over pads easier. one problem i have had with the sweet beaver is the bait tearing up too easy because i use a big hook and screw in weights. i am going to use the double wide beaver a lot this year because it is bigger and i am sure it won't tear up as easy.

Found the same to be true. My tournament partner uses the double wide to catch citation smallies.

I keep forgettin y'all don't have toothy critters to take those expensive weights away.I use a jig with something impaled on the hook.Well not through and through impaled but threaded on so it doesn't spin and impede the hook point penetration. P N J
