Default Fishing "Slow"

Now that winter is upon us in most parts of the country, you see a lot of advice saying to "fish slow", but what does that really mean?

Most people think that means just letting the bait sit, which it does. However, there is another part that often gets overlooked: How far do you move the bait?

For example, you have let your jig sit for as long as you can stand, and then move your bait. You raise the rod tip from, say, 10:00 to 12:00 and then let it sit again. A lot of time in cold water that is not how natural prey move. Instead, they move a couple of inches at a time, then stop and sit. I've found that rather than raising the rod tip from 10:00 to 12:00 raising it to 10:15 or 10:30 can increase your catch because you don't pull the bait out of the fish's strike zone, because in cold water it isn't very big to begin with.

Just a little food for thought.

Good tip. Also dropshot can keep the bait in the strike zone.
Reb see my post under MUST READ IN the OTHER TOPICS post. Think you will find it interesting!

Fishin Dude if you there check it out also.

Also try a hair jig on a dropshot rig. Reaction Innovations has now come out with a dropshot jig.

i use a small circle octupus hook with a 1/8 of an ounce bass casting sinker. my baits are any thing thats small like a 4'' worm to about a 5 inch worm.setting the hook is real simple. first, when you feel a tap ,make sure he has the worm and hook in it's mouth ,then do a real simple pull and the bass thinks it's catch is trying to get away, so the bass pulls. then all i do is keep pulling and fight the fish. the gear i use is a 6' medium action spinning with 6-8 pund line clear line on the reel.hope this helps!

Here is a good article on drop shotting with some additional links at the bottom:

As far as weights go I use these on soft/non-rocky bottoms:

And this type when in rocks:

my problem with slowing down is moving the bait. I believe I move it too far and even though I try to nudge it along, I'm always wanting to pick it up and hop it. I'm getting better at it, but I think its all in my mindset..feeling rushed sometimes.
