Topwater help
Going to BPS tomorrow. Really want to get some top water baits but am not sure what i really need. Any help with what to get and the colors would be helpful.

ok for topwater you only need 2 colors: Black and White(clear)
thats ALL you need... um i like throwin zara spooks(clear) or sammys, i like the walkin action and profile and if you have any cover you might want to get a frog (spro, sumo,or whatever) get black or white, dont go crazy with the colors, but these are also great for open water froggin if you can get past the stereotypes of frog fishin

While those are two main colors, I don't agree that that's ALL you need. I always like you have a couple chrome poppers and spook type baits.
Here's some of the basics: popper - There are many different brands, but I like the XCalibur or Strike King's versions. my favorite poppwer colors are chrome/black back, white, and black. Walk the dog baits - These are like the zara spook. Although, I don't like the spook. aiken is right about the sammy, muchbetter profile and walks the dog better. BUT, don't waste your money on a sammy, the XCalibur Jimmy (my favorite walk the dog bait) is just like it for a bit over half the price. Again, white, black, chome/black back, and I always have a clown color with me too. buzzbaits - I like Booyah and Cavitron, but Booyah's are much easier to find. Here, I use four colors. Black, White, Chartreuse, and Booyah's Citreuse color. BB

Top Water Choices
You forgot the best one of ALL times. The HELL RAISER made by Heddon. Formally Whopper Stopper. They actually stopped making them a few years ago. I stay on the lookout for them at all times. If any of you guys run across them or happen to have 1 or 2 let me know. I would like to add a few more to my tackle box. Really doesn't matter about the color. After a few dozen fish the paint is just about gone. The first time I had that happen I took my knife out and finished taking the paint off. It was a plastic body in a bone color. Seems to work just fine!!!!!! That is my # 1 top water lure. I have 6 of them in a variety of colors. The bone color beats them all hands down.

black and sliver has been the hot combo here for as long as I can remember, but I've seen just about every color used for topwater and they all worked. A lot of getting the fish to bite is location and presentation for topwater, color comes in third IMO

Other than frogs, Jitterbug is my favorite topwater bait. Hula Poppers aren't bad either

Well Bama you hit the nail on the head. The bait monkey got me good. But i did get lucky enough to run into some FLW guy that fishes Smith Mountain occasionally. He helped with a few does and don'ts. Guess i will see how that plays out.

The color of my topwater baits depends on water clarity. In clear water I try to match the bait color to the water surface color. Think of the fish's perspective looking up. If its bright out I match that with a metallic color. When its overcast chose duller colors like white or grey. In dark water I like brighter colors and also recommend larger, weedless options. Hope this helps.

I still like the Smithwick Devil's Horse, a topwater prop lure. The bullfrog color is NICE.
