Default Boyd Duckett No Longer with E21 Rods

Found this on Tackle Tour's blog. Found it pretty interesting. What do you carrot stick fans think?

2007 Bassmaster Classic Boyd Duckett is no longer with E21, the company who produced the orange Carrot Stik fishing rod.
Some highlights why he parted:
Duckett said he has severed ties with E-21 because of “strong disagreements over construction of the Carrot Stix series rods” and “because of the financial instability” of the Toronto, Canada-based company. Duckett said he believes his reputation as an angler and businessman would have been damaged had he maintained his relationship with the company.
Duckett learned recently that the Carrot Stix rods being sold in stores are not built as Duckett and Whiting had originally discussed. The rods are different from the prototypes that won ICAST in 2007. The rods are also different than the Carrot Stix rods Duckett uses while fishing on tour.
“The bottom line is that we have strong differences of opinion over the whole Carrot Stix concept. For example, I’m concerned about the general quality of the rods being made and how warranties are being honored. And I’ve learned that there are too many warranty claims being made for me to continue putting my endorsement on the Carrot Stix. I don’t want any part of the direction E-21 is now going.”

The fact that the rods Duckett uses, er... used were different than the ones sold in the stores doesn't surprise me much. I think this happens more often than most people think. But I respect Duckett for leaving E21 if he really believes the company is cheating people (for the lack of a better word)

I think that shows a class move on the part of Duckett. It will be interesting to see it carrot stik releases a statement to the quality of the rods.

no huge suprise most top anglers use custom built sticks.. there has to be something more behind his claim as the e-21 company has seriously reduced there ads...

As a carrot stick fan, I am rather disheartened. I currently own two of them and had planed on replacing pretty much my whole arsenal one at a time. I guess I will hold off and see what comes of this. I am hoping that it turns out to be a good thing where E-21 rededicates themselves to their rods. I have not had an issue with either of mine yet.

That fancy tackle shop we visited while at KY Lake had all their display reels mounted on... you guessed it, carrot stick handles. I've heard they break right above the handle. While we were there, a tourny fisher came in after his tournament with a brand new 4 piece carrot stick. Said it just like exploded on the hookset.

Cass, I bet in the next few weeks you'll be able to find all the carrot stix you want on ebay.

there is some truth to that but what is happening is that ken and boyd are pretty tight and ken has been talking to gary loomis formally of g loomis about starting their own line of rods for 8 months. i think that its about to get started.

Yeah I know 2 people personally that have had 2 of their stix break on a hook set but I think that at the rate that they "were" being sold that warranty returns would be higher because of the number of carrot stix out there. I haven't had any problems with my carrot stix...yet. Knock on wood that I won't have any problems.

Already happening. I've seen singles and lots of up to 10 being unloaded. Seems several guys want to unload them for some cash, before they break on them and they have no choice than another Carrot Stick that will probalby do the same thing, unless E21 changes their standards of manufacture. One good thing about the Carrot Stick breaking issue........................... it's taken some of the heat of us KISTLER fans! If only on a temporary basis. LOL

Ugly Stick forever!

I think there is an issue of marginal utility here. We have the technology to make lighter rods than are really desirable because of durability, so at what point does the tradeoff of lightness vs brittleness come into play? Perhaps the carrot stix is an example of taking it too far.

Remember when superline came out everyone went crazy about the technical numbers, then there was a backlash (no pun intended) because the first braids were unforgiving. Same for flourocarbon - it was invisible, smaller diameter and broke sometimes on the cast. Fishability and cost effectiveness ultimately have the ultimate say in what we buy. 3x plastics have pretty much disappeared from what I can tell, although I bet somewhere scientists are tweaking that formula and it might make a reappearance.

Come to think of it, I was at BPS in Denham Springs the yesterday and saw probably 6-8 of them lined up behind the counter with some other return rods. Didn't investigate the reason, but I am glad I didn't dropped a Benny and a half on one yet because I have been contemplating the purchase.

Usually that kind of stuff gets pulled pretty quick when this happens with any company
