Default What the heck happened to my shimano baitcaster?

When i went to use my Shimano Baitcasting reel i made three or four casts with a spinnerbait, and it casts fine but when i reel it in the sliding bar across the top will not go back and forth at all and when the line winds on it goes all in one area... and also about every 1/2 of the reel turn I can feel resistance on it and thne it loosens up another 1/2 a turn later... does anybody know how this can be fixed??? Thank You

Sounds like a worn out pawl gear. Its a very common and inexpensive problem to fix, normally about 3-5 bucks for a Garcia and I imagine the same for a Shimano. Just take it to a tackle shop that does reel repair, they see it all the time I'm sure and can set you up.

sometimes weeds get in that gear and cause it to bind and strip.that's why you need to clean your reels constantly.

Yep, and even more than weeds any sand or dirt around the worm gear will wear it out very quickly. I have had to replace 2 pawls in the past month because I got sand in the worm gear down in Florida.

yep ,they are correct .the parts lady at abu said that the gears on the pawl are plastic on purpose because some anglers will git a finger hung in the bar while realing, better to lose a gear than a finger.{no sh...}

Sometimes if you fiddle with it you can get it to work a bit longer, but its normally temporary.

PnJ, how much is it for a new pawl on a Shimano? I've never had to replace one, but I can't believe that they charge more than 5 bucks, its such a tiny part...if they do I suppose I can sorta understand a little of your contempt for them.

Your not costing me anything.WTL,I don't know on the line pawl, but 8-10 years ago when I owned Shimano reels,the plastic spool tension knob developed a problem in the threads, so it wouldn't tighten down. I called Shimano to order a new one and the lady told me it was going to be $17.00 + $1.50 shipping.It a was plastic ? I made one out of aluminum at work that outlasted the reel engagement mechanism, and threw the reels away once it wouldn't engage, or disengage any more. More than likely it would not have been worth the price to fix it if they charging $17.00 for a plastic knob. Back then I paid $119.95 for the Castaic reels. I had bought 2 of them and threw both away after they broke on me less than 2 years.Back then, the Curados were red in color. I bought 4 at $89.00 each, Those curados still work today, I sold them to a friend once I got angry at Shimano's service department. He doesn't use them anymore, he uses Chronarchs super free reels .The story is if you have a good experience with Shimano, you will own them for life.If you have been mistreated by customer service, you won't be back to buy another reel from them. You got it right, use what you can afford and stuff some money away to upgrade.The mid line reels work as well as the high dollar reels, you just don't get the satisfaction of wasting more money than you needed to. P N J
