What the heck happened to my shimano baitcaster?
When i went to use my Shimano Baitcasting reel i made three or four casts with a spinnerbait, and it casts fine but when i reel it in the sliding bar across the top will not go back and forth at all and when the line winds on it goes all in one area... and also about every 1/2 of the reel turn I can feel resistance on it and thne it loosens up another 1/2 a turn later... does anybody know how this can be fixed??? Thank You

Sounds like a worn out pawl gear. Its a very common and inexpensive problem to fix, normally about 3-5 bucks for a Garcia and I imagine the same for a Shimano. Just take it to a tackle shop that does reel repair, they see it all the time I'm sure and can set you up.

sometimes weeds get in that gear and cause it to bind and strip.that's why you need to clean your reels constantly.

Yep, and even more than weeds any sand or dirt around the worm gear will wear it out very quickly. I have had to replace 2 pawls in the past month because I got sand in the worm gear down in Florida.

yep ,they are correct .the parts lady at abu said that the gears on the pawl are plastic on purpose because some anglers will git a finger hung in the bar while realing, better to lose a gear than a finger.{no sh...}

Sometimes if you fiddle with it you can get it to work a bit longer, but its normally temporary.
PnJ, how much is it for a new pawl on a Shimano? I've never had to replace one, but I can't believe that they charge more than 5 bucks, its such a tiny part...if they do I suppose I can sorta understand a little of your contempt for them.
