my bud is fishing tern's with me this year and hes new to fishing rivers and lakes. All he's fished had been over stocked ponds were it's easy to get bass. i am trying to show him diff ways to rig to like drop shot, using top water, and jigs and when to ****ch colors. he asked me how long to try one color before trying another. I told him don't know, i just go with what i feel. what is a good time limit to try one color or what should i tell him?

if your changing colors every 30 minutes your hook aint in the water. just match the forage. and use natural colors in clear water and anything else in stained water. if your getting a few bites on one color change up and see if they want somthing alittle different.

Not an easy question to answer really. I've been at this game for 40 years, and I am still learning. However, with experience one learns which colors generally work well in various conditions. I have certain colors that I know work very well depnding on so and so. So I start with those colors. I just kind of developed an instinct for knowing when to change. There is no hard and fast rule. Certain conditions call for certain colors, often based on the type of forage the bass are targeting at the time. But other variables come into play, such as time of day, amount of sunlight. how clear or cloudy the water is, and so on. I will usually have at least 6 rods ready and rigged with various lure types and colors ready to use when I am in my boat. For instance I might have a white spinnerbait and a blue/black jig and pig. I use each one for a specific approach. If after an hour, neither lure proves to be working, I can assume one of three things. Wrong colors, wrong technique such as type of retrieve, or wrong pattern such as the bass are in a type of structure I havn't tried yet. I have found that the biggest difference is in changing technique and pattern. Color may make a difference at times, but usually if I am failing to connect, I am in the wrong type of cover/structure. So I may change colors every hour or so if I am unsure, but often, I end up using the same colors most of the day if I feel confindent. Knowing which pattern the fish are on will bring much better success than any certain color. You take two fisherman who are both well established. They will each have theri favorite colors, and they will both catch fish on those colors. It's knowing the pattern the fish are on that makes the big difference.

ummm just tell him to start with a provin basic natural color.... lets say green pumpkin... or to throw whatever is big on that lake..... like lets say junebug...... throw then for an hour or longer..... but explain to him that during colder months or after cold fronts when the fish are shut down you have to stick with what you know is going to work.....
also let him see what you are throwin if you are catchin fish and let him change

I'm like Marty in that I will change lures or locations instead of changing colors of the same bait all the time. I only have a few basic colors of each lure to begin with. I like to keep it as simple as possible.
