Default jigging spoon hooks

Do you guys generally fish jigging spoons with treble hooks or single hooks or does it depend on where you're fishing? If you use a single hook, what size/type of hook do you use?

I think they're fished with trebles. And you really should add a split ring on the top, help reduce line twist a lot.

I know most of the ones sold come with trebles, sure seems like you could lose a lot spoons in a days fishing.

Can't remember where I read it but change the hook to the line tie and tie to the reg hook end. Supposed to give a nice different action. Something the fish haven't seen.

The spoons I use for open water schooling fish always have trebles. I don't know what the hookup ratio would be if you tried a single hook, but I'm guessing not very good.

I just remembered watching a show about them. Right out of the package, he replaced the stock treble with a Rapala Sure Set hook, and added a split ring to the top.

He also said, when the bite was tough, he added a feathered treble on the line above the spoon, so it when he ripped it up off the bottom, it looked like it was chasing something smaller.

You know, one would think that, and I know I did, but I have since changed my belief in that after fishing heavy spoon type lures with trebles and single hooks. I was pleasantly surprised that the hook up ratio was better with the single hook over the treble. Not overwhelmingly, better but noticeably higher. In some areas where I fish, trebles are not permitted so you have to use a single hook anyway.

I have my suspicions as to why but at this time it is only speculation.

I swap most trebels for single hooks on jiggging spoons. My hook up ratio is no worse than with a regular jig. It's easier on the fish being released and I loose fewer lures to snags. I leave the trebel hook on swimming spoons.

always trebles and always triple grips. Best hook up ratio, and dont get snagged as often from the turned in points.
