Outboard Jets

Because I intend to use my future bass boat primarily in the local rivers (Delaware and Susquehanna), I am thinking that an outboard jet motor may be the way to go.

Interestingly, there is very little info on outboard jet motors and very few dealers seem to know much about them.

Has anyone here owned or used an outboard jet motor?

yes they turn very slowly.. do not run very fast..

Slower than prop boats fer sure. You also need more hp (around 30% to be exact) to push the boat,more weight,more maintenance,. Thats some of the cons. The only pro that I can come up with is yes you can run much shallower. Oh yea another con MORE MONEY. Get the picture.

You could get a jack plate on a regular prop motor. That will definitely get you shallower, as thats what the flats guys down here do running on plane in anywhere from 10" to 14" of water.

the susquehanna is a rock strewn mother of a river jet moters are the thing...

i am goin with a friend from willamsport pa to pick up a new boat next saturday.. he is a smallie guy...

LOL @ christopher Dinging a prop is a understatment. Trying to navigate the Susquehana is more like trying to walk through a minefeild. Been there done that and ifn u aint careful the end result is about the same.

the only way to get very far up on the delaware near me is using jet drive..sure i can run my boat but i can only cover a mile or 2 of the river.jet drive can get you up and down the river for miles...remember when roland(ahhh son)won on the conn.river years back.he was one of very,very few if any anglers running jet drive.i believe he had a ranger(may have been triton) alum bass boat just for that tourney.that was years ago.
talk to anybody that seriously fishes the delaware or susq...probably 99% of them use jet drive.and yes you will need a bigger motor to get anywhere.and you must be moving at a good clip to control a boat with jet drive.

I remeber that time very well Tom. That was one of the times that a person really thought out there options. He really put it on the rest. The smallies he where catching where NICE to say the least.

If your fishing the Susky, you can't go wrong with a jet.... Yes, I know they produce less power then the head, yes, the use more gas, yes they are louder on plane.

BUT, with a correctly set up rig, you can run in INCHES of water... places NO prop will go. I fish the susky and the juniata on a regular basis... and if you are in 3-4 feet of water, your in a DEEP hole.

I wouldn't give my jet up for anything.

Long story short. Lakes and deep water. Prop
Shallow rivers hunting those smallies.... jet.

Quite a few people use them here.They do rob you power, a Pennsylvanian who fishes in my area alot has a 17 ft. aluminum Bass tracker boat , but runs a 135 hp V6 motor in it to remedy the jet lower unit hp problem.Heavy weed lakes are another reason jet lower units are popular here and are nice to have , thick weeds are hard on water impellers, I replace the water impeller twice a year here some years, because of the lakes I prefer to fish. ^^^ I got my Jet used.

Its a 2003 Merc 25/20, so its the smallest one they make. I run it on a 1448 Lowe with a welded up transon. Am I gonna set any speed records? Nope... I would GUESS it runs in the low 20's. Can I get into water that most crafts can't? Oh yeah. I have a light boat, and a light (as you can get) jet.... it runs shallow, drafts shallow, and is great for the juniata and susky.

My father has a 1448 with a 25/20 jet also. He bought and had his set up at lakeside marina in harrisburg.

Kory, thanks for the information. If you have time, let me know how the lakeside marina does with setting up the jet. I live in Morgantown and I am not that far from Harrisburg. Ultimately, once I get serious about gettin' the boat, I am going to have to find a place that can set up a jet.

My jet (and the welded up transom work) was done and setup at Big bee boats by the previous owner.

I think if you go to lakeside or BBB you'll be fine.
