You don't necessarily need a trailer on a jig, it just adds more realism and bulk, as a jig is usually an imitation for a craw. In really cold water or when I am swimming a jig, I often throw a jig without a trailer. I believe a good trailer really adds to your presentation though. Personally I like a paca chunk from Net bait, or a chigger chunk from powerbait.

Keith, I never would have thought of that but the fact it works doesn't surprise me at all.

You really don't need a trailer but it adds to the attraction of the jig. Most of the time it is supposed to look like a crawfish so the trailer makes it look like one.
