Pond Fishing

i've stumbled accross a set of ponds near my house and Ive been fishing them for a while and found the one that produces the best fish. The other ones are full of panfish...mostly pumpkinseed so they are always getting caught on my lures. The pond i fish in is about 5 feet deep in the middle, Surrounded by cattails and linked into a bunch of other ponds just like it. It is loaded with pockets and vegetation and you need waders to go into it because of the cattails. I have fished it twice with my dad And we have tried 2 lures so far. My dad was using a spinnerbait and had a monster pike come up to check it out but that was it for him. I was using a Jointed Floating Rapala Minnow(Black and Silver) And i got 2 decent pond-sized pike and the second day i caught two 4 pound bass casting into pockets. I guess that gives you a basic picture of the pond. It has some monster pike and i saw a 6 lb. Bass swimming arround so i was wondering what you might recommend. The pond has carp, pike and bass with a couple pumpkinseeds. Any help on what lures and how to use them would help. Sorry about the length of the post!

Oh and if you need this info i use a spinning reel on an ugly stik lite...no baitcasting for me

For this time of year I would recommend a white spinnerbait, or any plastic worm, or a crankbait, even a rattletrap.
If the fishing is slow, opt for the worm...its been really slow here, what area of the u.s. do ya live in?

ok i have a terminator spinnerbait with white and yellow skirt, 1 Rapala Crankbait in a bluegill pattern that goes to 4 feet. I think that may go too deep. What kind of worm do you recommend? I dont have any fake ones...only gulp worms in that jar which didnt work in the other pond and some nightcrawlers i can dig up right there

go to walmart and get a tiki stick in any color, or just about any brand of purple 6-7 inch worm, if there is a bass in there, they'll hit purple generally speaking, cost of one bag of the above mentioned baits probably run ya 3 buck or so.. that crankbait and spinnerbait you mentioned should work fine if the pike can keep away from it..lol..good luck and welcome to the forum!

get the red shad or my fav is the watermelon with red flake in it, you can rig it texas style, the hook in the front with the barb buried in the plastic, or wacky rig it, just hook it right through the middle, let it sink to the bottom and let it sit, then lift the rod tip up a few inches and back down , let it sit and repeat.

I favor the watermelon/red glitter worm as well, only I use zoom speedworms in that color with the tails removed......I rig them weightless on 2/0 hooks and fish them that way...slow falling, deadsticking.

Be sure to get worm hooks since they are off-set to hold the bait on instead of sliding off. Nobody told me that when I was new, Hope this helps.

Rig those worms like JB said and they will catch fish. Since you are using a spinning reel, when you set the hook grab the spool while you set it to keep the drag from pulling on the hookset.

This past weekend my buddy and I caught 14, and all but a couple came on either a white spinnerbait, a Tiki Stick, or a 4" worm. They are feeding for winter, and the bite should be pretty good.

I'm in NY fishing a pond that's not more than 8' deep with submerged vegetation throughout. The water temp has been in the mid to high 40s and I've been using lipless cranks, inline spinners, spinnerbaits and super shallow crankbaits, such as Baby 1- Minus and Swim'n Image.

Yep. I'm in Brighton. My longtime fishing partner lives on Rt. 250, not too far from Ayrault.

Assalt Salt Shaker Worm works well on small ponds as well as alluringbait trick stick and tube and wormie
