Finding Structure

Guys,

If you were launching on a whole new body of water, in the heat of the Summer, and planned to fish deep, where would you start your search for submergent structure, i.e., rocks, sunken road beds, stumps, trees, etc.?

What would be your first areas to look for?

In the heat of summer fish move way back in creeks and shade for cover..

Fishing deep works in Gov. Arnold's lakes but not on the east coast..

I have to ask why fish deep?

in the summer shade and currant is your friend everything else amounts to nothing.. i tend to hit every piece of shade i can find reguardless of depth ..when i run out of shade 1-2 pm then i go deep..

I agree, What's the point of going deep, I never go deep, never have don't think I will soon either.... non the less in the summer, find shade and/or deeper pockets in the creeks. Or example, if the average depth is 10' feet deep, and you find a place that's 15' deep, fish that, the water may be a few degrees cooler.

But if you insist, I would use a fish finder.

Some people would say the fish go deep for the cooler water temperatures but I just fish the shade.

I am assuming you also don't have a lake map, otherwise I would use the map to locate off shore deeper water near shallow points, flats and such. However, if you have no map and still want to fish deeper water, I would suggest asking some locals if you can where the deeper water on the lake is, and go from there. Use your electronics to find breaks leading from shallow water to deeper water with good shade producing cover on the breaks. If you are unable to find a local who knows the lakes structure, then take a look at the lakes surrounding landscape. Fine steep points leading into the lake. Also, look for landscapes such as hills that are steeper approaching the water than other landscapes. What you see above water often continues into the water. If you can find a steep hillside near a point, you might find what your looking for in deeper water where the two converge underwater.

ummm if you want to go deep and not fish shade look on the map to find some submerged trees or ask locals.... then use the fish finder

i will go for the shade in summer as well as looking for fairly deep drop offs such as rocky cliffs and such.

I always prefer to fish the shade as well in summer. Shallow and mid depths both. I'll usually start shallow in the early morning hours, then move off to mid depths and fish the deeper edges of strong weedlines. However, if I find that I'm not doing well in those mid depth areas, I'll usually return to the shallows and try to fish the thickest shallow cover I can find. The natural lakes I fish around here don't offer much in deep structure or I might head out there with deep cranks.

Same here especially on the NYC reservoirs. I'm off the water and heading on home by 1pm.

Whenever I'm fishin the shade I always look to target laydowns by casting parallel to that piece of cover. This has always been good for a few fish anyways.

alot of days when its sunny there may be 4-5 feet of shade on the banks, the fish will be there next to timbers and hit a lure almost as soon as it hits ...cast into the sun and ya dont get as many hits.

I like keithdog's approach, follow the contours of the land into the water. I really like to fish deep and a lot of the lakes around here you are either fishing docks or fishing deep. I normally fish 10-14' outside weedlines in the summer but have caught some good ones in 20-35'. I think you have to be really good at reading your sonar fishing that deep though.
