split grip

I am at the point were i would like to make a split grip rod , but since i have never done this before i am open to any advice someone could have . for example would you use all hand tools or use something like a lathe to keep the diameters running true to each other ? now i do have a toolmakers back round and a family owned machine shop at my disposal if need be , i am just looking for the best way to do this . thanks in advance for any advice

Are we talking making a rod from scratch or converting a standard handle to a split grip?

i would be interested in learning to do both ,although making a rod from scratch does seem like it would be more fun . But to start i think i will be converting a standard handle .

Making a rod is hard work, and very tedious. I'd never have the patience for it, that's why my dad is building my rod.

I "converted" one and it was not too difficult. The hardest part was removing the cork. If you have a machine shop then I might suggest trying to chuck the rod up in a lathe if possible and turning it slowly and cutting the cork off just like cutting steel. Not sure how well it would work, but it would be the easiest way. You could also do some good shaping of the remaining cork to fit your hand that way. I'm curious if you do this so post up if you try it.

if i was to end up machining it i would most likely end up using a heavy emery cloth to start
just because of the diameter of were you would grabbing the blank . if you were to touch it with a tool bit without putting a center in the end to steady it the rod would jump all over the place even though the cork is extremely soft . but the emery cloth and a finishing file would be all it would take .
