Using The Magnetic Brake and Tension Knob
OK Guys, I know all about setting the tension knob for your lure weight, but I am confused about the Magnetci Brake. Do I set the Tension Knob or the Magnetic Brake first? If I'm casting a 1/2 Ounce 'Trap on a day with no wind, where should I set the Brake?
Any info. will be highly appreciated... -Lunk-

your magnetic brake is supposed to be while you are casting, and the tension knob is for when the bait lands. On my pro qualifier, I leave my mag brake around 5 or 6, and hold the rod at a 45 degree angle, loosen it till the bait starts to fall fairly quick, then tighten it up to where it is going down rather slow.

LL, Turn your M brake completely off first. Reel your bait to the tip of your rod. hold y our rod at a 45 degree angle pointing up. then let your bait fall and the reel free spool. It should take about 5 seconds for your bait to hit the ground. (I normally don't let it get all the way to the ground because of backlash though). If it doesn't take about 5 seconds, adjust your spool tension so it does. It is recommended to do this after changing baits. (with different weighs of course. you wouldn't change it is you put the same bait on, just a diff color.)
As for the M Brake. I set mine according to my skill level. I have gottem pretty decent since the beginning of the summer. I started with it on 10 (max) and have it down to 2.5 (it changes by increments of .5). This summer, I hopefully will have it turned off. Now of course the higher your m brake, the shorter your casts. The spool tension is designed to keep the spool spinning at the right speed. because if you cast, and the spool spins faster than your bait is traveling... you guessed it! Backlash... The brake, whether magnetic or centrifugal or whatever, is designed to sloww your bait down before it hits the water. Preventing... you guessed it again! Backlash. That's why more experienced people can turn the brake off and slow the bait with their thumb. Hope this helps! BB

See, I rarely EVER use my MB, mainly because I didn't know how to set it. That "5 second" rule you explained sounded pretty good; I might thry that.
This summer I kept my MB on "0" the whole time, with only 1 bad backlash, which I got out by had. -Lunk-
