Reel Brakes
Well, it's that time to re-line, re-grease, and get ready to.... well..... FISH! I need to know one thing though. How do you set the brakes on these types of reels?
-Lunk- P.s. - This is really a Shimano Citica

i put 2 of the caps up and the others down, if you have the manual check it out, but thats my preference, yours may vary...
On my citica, i take the caps that are across from each other. Keep in mind on this reel for me, i keep it almost free spooled to pitch with..If you are going to throw something heavy a country mile, you may want to put 4 caps up and then back them off as you get used to it..always used your thumb to, on the spool as your learning. |

Ok.... Lemme see if I have this right...
I will mainly be casting and pitching Texas Rigs, 1/4-1/2 ounce. The heavier weight I go, the more caps I pull up? After I feel comfortable, then I begin to have less caps up? -Lunk-

all the caps down is full brakes, try 2-3 caps up, that releases tension, makes it turn freer,

Well...
I put all the caps up and did a light pitch - 8 yds. I put all the caps down and did a light pitch - 8 yds. I didn't notice a difference?! Do you have to cast to feel it? -Lunk-

you notice it more on long cast where the spool is really turning, keep your thumb on the spool to avoid a backlash frm hell. go ahead and put 2 up and rest down, and forgettaboutit.

Lunk...you wouldn't notice much difference at all when pitching because those brakes are driven by centrifugal force, the faster the spool spins the more the brakes are applied, so when pitching the spool is not spinning fast enough to apply much braking at all. It's like that spinning thing you used to play on in the play ground where every one would get on and see how fast you could get it spinning...the faster it went the harder it was to hold on.
Well, it will either make sense or I just confused you even more...LOL

Tha Carpman says "take all tha brakes off". In case of run-away, use thumb to slow down. Practise on flippin' and pitchin' and you'll be ok with no brakes. C Man

LL, the more of then you have set (pushed in) the higher the brake. The less, the lower the brake. The only thing you have to do is make sure that the brakes are set parallel. So if you set one, the one across from it must be set.
BB p.s. I prefer Magnetic brakes cause you don't have to deal with this.

I think it's the other way around, A-Rock. As Links said, caps 'out' are 'brakes on', and caps 'in', are 'brakes off'.
I have it set with two out and four in. I guess I'll have to see what happens when the time comes... -Lunk-

LL, I don't know about that reel, but my abu and my BPS reels both have the brakes on when the cap is in.

On is out and off is in.
My little "word phrase" to remember is: OFFIN (think . . . I often go fishing). That way you will always know that off is in. |
