Fluocarbon?
Yesterday is was bluegill fishing thru the ice in a gin clear lake and was watching how the fish react to my bait. A few of my poles were rigged with different fluocarbons same pound test (4lb)and 2 rods were plain mono also 4lb test.
I could not tell any difference looking through the camera between the fluocarbon and the mono. My question is does my camera see what the fish does?from what I see fluocarbon line is not nearly invisible it was just as visible as mono at 25 feet. The 2 fluocarbons I was using were Yo-zuri and Seaguar Invis X. One more thing I found out is the Berkly cyrstal 2lb was even more visible than all of them. Are there any Independent studies out there that I could read to help me on making better choices when Im looking for a truly good fluocarbon line? Last edited by chubs; 02-04-08 at 05:22 PM. I like using it just for better bottom feel.
Invisible or not, it gives me better feel, and fish still bite on mono. so I don't see why they would not on fluorocarbon. -Lunk-

Lunker, I Know what you are saying but if you really want better feel than why not just a plain braid?

From everything I've seen, read and heard Flouro is regarded as a less visible line, however everything that I've read about fish indicates that most fish actually don't use their sight as much as we would like to believe. Most fish, especially bass who use their lateral lines to pickup on vibration changes..it's believed that even a blind bass can learn how to feed without sight...read: http://www.naturalmotionlures.com/ba...ateralline.php

My dad caught a 7 pounder one time with one blind eye. I know it could see with the other, but still....

First, fish don't see how we do.
While, fc line's refractive index is nearly that of water and hence the near invisiblity claims, mono is not far off either. So then you might ask, why choose fc over mono? Ultimately the bottom line decision is yours to make. In addition, your observation of berkely's crystal should have been expected. Braid and Fireline are inherently opaque. Not good or bad, but it is what it is. Here are some differences: FC is not any where near as susceptible to UV as mono does not absorb much water overtime as mono does has a higher density which translates to it being more efficient transmitting feedback to you its density also makes it sink. if you need your line to float, fc is not the best choice can have as much or more stretch than mono of the same strength. However it is not as resilient as mono in that regard. where mono would contract back to the its original length, fc line is more prone to not contract and remain more stretched. it is more expensive mono far more economical to use it stretches and that can be a plus for some applications has great versatility.

islandbass,
When you say "can have as much or more stretch than mono of the same strength" as well as "FC will remain more stretched". I have my doubts about these items.

Thank guys My whole point is that I dont think they should advertise near invisiblity on these lines.Kinda misleading to the customers.

For all that are interested, Tackle Tour did a pretty detailed test on a bunch of different florocarbon lines. Here's a link to two articles that they wrote about their tests.

Always another gimmick to get buyers. Yet I do like the fact that...
> Fluoro doesn't attract as many UV rays as mono... > Fluoro gives better bottom composition to the angler... > Fluoro has a smaller strength-to-diameter ration.... -Lunk-
