To shapen or not to sharpen
I was buying some 2/0 worm hooks on Friday and was reading the EagleClaw package that 'suggested' the sharpening hooks removed the protective coating and caused hooks to not last as long - of course, they were suggesting you buy new hooks instead. A bit self serving.
So, do you sharpen hooks? |

I use Gamagatsu or Owner mostly. I never sharpen them right out of the package but I will when they get dull. I agree that you should not sharpen them until they need it because after sharpening several times you whittle them down too much and they won't be as sharp as they should be.

I think they were advocating never sharpen - always buy new (which I kinda took with a grain of salt for obvious reasons).

I think because they are chemically sharpened, you can not sharpen them by hand. Of course you can but you then take the chemical "coating" off and the hook will then start to rust.

Chemically sharpened??? I don't know about chemical sharpening - never heard of such a thing. I thought they were talking about some kind of sealant (like a clear acrylic) and sharpening would remove that and make the hook more prone to rust ???

As I undertand it, in the old days you bought a pack of hooks then you sharpened them yourself. They just didnt have the manufacturing ability to make them really really sharp.
Today, I can't imagine hooks sharper than some of the aftermarket hooks. Don't mess with a good thing, if they are sharp leave them be. Personally I have never liked eagle claw. I use gammies mostly, although Mustad, Daiichi are good. Matzuos at walmart are actually better than eagle claw as far as I have seen.

Some of the hooks are chemically sharpened I believe so you can not get it as sharp yourself as it was out of the package. I sharped hooks when I don't want to change them, but mostly I will just change them out when they get dull. I don't catch THAT many fish. I like to use the red hooks and generally change them once the red wears off, but usually a pike bites them off first. |

Here is a question. What do you guys use to sharpen your hooks? I used to use a old pencil looking thing that you put the end of the hook in. It's long gone though as I can't find it.

I usually get them hung on something and lose them before I wear down a hook.

Its amazing what a salty soft plastic will do to a hook in a day or three before I fish again. I toss a few hooks a week, or as mentioned lose them. I have had a lot of hooks bend on a snag or hookset/fight as well. I have not had an eagle claw bend yet, but the Gamy's always seem to bend. It must be a less dense material?

My hang ups happen when I am about to leave and for whatever reason I choose to throw one more cast after I have packed most everything up. That is when I usually get hung.

I have some older crankbaits and some spinners that I sould set down and sharpen. A hook, I agree I lose them before they get dull usually.

I use a large white wetstone my grandfather used to sharpen chisels. I know its the finest grade stone I've ever seen.

You know the fun thing is I had been out a few times this year, pushing the daylight limits... just to realize if I take off the polarized glasses I still have about an hour left! Nothing like realizing that on a good productive night!

I always sharpen. I use Gamakatsu hooks exclusively. In have been buying them since back in the early 1980's when we had to buy 500 packs at a time straight from the importer. We would go around and take orders for all we(three of us) could not handle. I will say that they were much sharper then than now. Now I always sharpen. If a hook will not easily penetrate your fingernail with out undo pressure then sharpen. Fish2win
