Ultralight help me pick a line?
Just picked up an ultralight. I have wanted one for so long. Local store (Meijer) was running a deal this week, if you buy your fishing license from them you get any rod reel combo for 50% off...
I grabbed an 5' ugly stick / Diawa ultralight combo for $16. I am really looking forward to trying this out. Given the reel & pole here, what line would you all recommend? Should I go with a low lb Power Pro, as I use power pro almost exclusively on my other setups. Maybe a mono would be good with this setup? I am sure the reel cant handle too much with a real heavy line. Thoughts anyone?

i would recommebd a 6lb. mono.....its light but is more reliable than 4 and not than bulky.....i wouldn't recommend braid for an ultralight...

My dad used an UL for bass fishing almost exclusively for bass fishing for almost a year, he had 20lb Ppro on it I think, it it bad shape now, but it was just a 20$ Shakespeare! I would not recommend putting braid on one though, imo you should do with 6lb-10lb mono. Have fun! Little bass are a freaking blast on UL tackle!

like crappie and bluegill ultralight or bass ultralight...... you should be good with 6-10 (maybe 12) lb mono..... superlines like power pro will mess the eyes up..... should be fun tho

Ok so i will most likely go mono then. I will do some research as to a good quality at the 6-8 lb range.

On my one ultra light reel I have #6 braid and i like it so far, its more sensative then mono and I think that it might be a little stronger, I've seen my dad catch 3lb. smallmouth on #6 braid that I think would have broken mono, might just be me though

I will look into Sufix...
Just found a coupon on their line at their site as well... that always helps with decisions! http://www.sufix.com/downloads/coupo...009_coupon.pdf

Why not go with a 6 to 8lb fluorocarbon line ? It would resist abrasion more and be less visible underwater, and be more sensitive . I am assuming you would be using the rod for finesse presentations right .

The 6# mono and 4# if you're daring. JMHO, but while 8# is "more" secure, I think at that point, it is no longer "ultralight" by line weight. I use 6# Trilene XL but will try 4# for the fun of it some time soon.

I bass fish with the small spinning reel with 10lb spider wire and use it for my finess and skipping docks and have had 0 problems and have yet to break off a fish.I have even used crappie fish. The plus about braid is no line twist. Its a 20 buck mitchell. What are you gonna be fishing for?Crappie i would say use mono. The 10lb is 2lb dia.(braid)

I would go as light as you can 2-4lb, you catch way more fish, you have to set the drag right, and when you get practice you'll have to learn how to back reel for bigger fish(dont swing any fish)

I'd definately say no to braid on an UL.
I use 4lb mono for panfish. or 6lb fluoroclear for any other UL applications. BB

i personally think 6# mono or fluoro would be a very good decision, but dont limit yourself to that, my brother fishes an ultralight with 10 to 15 lb braid and gives you the same feeling and great fight but doesnt make you worry about breaking off. In my opinion 2-4 lb will not catch you any more fish than even an 8# fluoro, but the kid is right about not swingin em!
