Shimano spinning reel advice
I am debating to go with a shimano symetre over another stradic fi because of the price difference. I love the stradics but they are a little spendy. Has anyone used the symetre?

I've heard it's a great reel. I personally haven't tried one since I only really use one spinning reel.
I've got a Sahara 2500 for sale (last years model) for 45 bucks shipped. almost brand new. I've fished with it two or three times.. no cosmetic or mechanical damage whatsoever. it comes with a spare spool filled with fireline. PM me if you're interested. BB

i have 3 symetre's but i stopped buying them when they quit giving an extra spool with them. they cost about 99$ and the spare spool is about 25. for that price you can get the saros, so thats what i put on a few of my new rods. im my opinion they are great reels. i have been using my oldest one for about 3 years with absolutely no trouble at all.

I have two 2500 symetres I bought last year. I fish them on a St Croix 7' Avid and on a 7' Powell. They balance well and I think they are super nice reels. I purchased mine last year and both came with spare spools which is a must for me. Surprised to hear no more spare spools. Maybe your outlet will have some leftovers with the spares. I also have two Spirex 1000 reels which I have been happy with over the past several years. When I checked the Symetres out of the box as compared to the Spirex 2500 as I recall the Symetre seemed just a tad smoother and lighter. I like both reels and dont even notice the differences when Im fishin um.

Lancer here...reprising a familiar theme.
While I agree that the Symetre will git 'er done I'd recommend you make your choice based on overall weight and the quality of the spools. If the Stradic is at least 3/4 ounce lighter than the Symetre then the balance should tip in favor of the Stradic. If that's not enough to cause you to skip a few more Happy Hours in order to purchase the Stradic then consider the spool(s) furnished with each reel. The main spool on any spin reel should have the "reinforced" rim. By this I mean titanium (or similar and more durable material) material that will be resistant to wear from braid and nicking. A pure aluminum spool is far more vulnerable to damage that you may not notice but may cause damage to (especially) mono and fluoro line. I am notorious for preaching that "Weight Is Your Enemy" but it IS true that even small weight gains will accelerate fatigue and diminish sensitivity. After years of my sermonizing I'm pleased to note, though I certainly merit no credit for it, that the major reel companies are hearing the small voice in the wilderness and are offering more and more reels, both casting and spinning, that are relatively svelte (See: "Skinny") when compared to previous models. Soooooo... When selecting any reel, try to scrape up the necessary bux to buy one that is the lightest possible, consistent, of course, with overall quality. That, as they say, is THAT! Good luck. I have 5 or 6 of them and really like them. I've never had any problems with them, I couldn't tell you if I got spare spools or not since I never use them. Also the Symtre went through a redesign and the new one was released last fall, mine are the older ones.
As Lancer said, they might be a little heavy, but they are solid reels. |

Yep, I was asking about the new one, I had one of the old ones until my much better half figured it would look better as bass structure.

Thats a scary thought! It will go legal after I graduate college and can afford it In the mean time I will have to deal with being poor and afraid.

Just download the Shimano Catalog from their site and compare the new symetre and stradic. I would think that there might be 1-4 things the newer stradic might have over the newer symetre. Once you know what the differences are, you can then make a better, quality decision. Heck, the Saros, which is inbetween those two could even be a possibility. For me personally, I don't think I'd go higher than a Saros price wise.
