suspended bass

hi,

now that I got my fish finder, I went exploring the lake. It has a shallow end of avg. depth of 5-6 feet. The lake becomes much deeper toward the dam, which is 25-30 feet deep. This is a long, 50 acre lake. Most bass in the lake are located at the dam and deeper parts of the lake, around 7-25 feet under. Surface temp. is at 65F. Water clarity/visibility is about 3-4 feet. There is not much deep structure in this lake, so bass are hanging around slopes.

Under those conditions, what might be my best shot at putting fish in the boat?

I've been a shallow water fisherman all the years of my fishing, but I've never really considered a situation like this.

Dropshot would work, but I would throw a jig-n-pig, a crankbait, or a T-rig. The fish are relating to the slope of the dam. I'd position my boat parallel to the dam, throw up shallow, and work your bait down the slope from shallow to deep if you are using a jig or worm. Crankbaiting I'd throw parallel to the dam and bang the baits off the riprap along the dam. I'd try paralleling a spinnerbait, too.

Get over the fish and us a jigging spoon. Just pop it up and let it fall. It can get some good ones in your situation.

now you have marked the fish on the dam slope i would choos a crank that will dive 8-10 feet and work it very slowly down the slope.
carolina rig the slope for sure useing a lizard or big worm..

Well if they are truly suspended, which IMO means in the middle of the lake, at least 5-8 feet up off the bottom, and not really relating to structure, then I have no idea, because I've tried about everything there is and can't catch them. If they are relating to structure, or cover, then ALL of the above can work. A c-rig or mojo-rig, has been the best setup for me in deeper water, along with a drop shot.

I agree with Fishie on this one, definitely a jigging spoon. I would also try a heavier spinnerbait to get down to the fishes depth, or a weightless plastic worm with a slow decent.

Lizards

Some of them are sitting on the bottom, while others are in the middle of the water or just above the bottom. I've seen schools that tend to have some good sized fish.

Can you get these jigging spoons at Wal-Mart? Can't drive yet, so I rarely get to go to BPS.

I belive the suspending rattling rogue is your best bet on getting suspending fish to hit, it has been proven time and time again for smallmouths at ky lake in the 95 BASS tournies, when anglers used to pay ppl to add B B's to the rouge to get that suspend feature. It only took Smithwick a few months later after those tournies to add the suspending rattling rogue to their product line..

If you live in Northern Georgia, look on your map and see how far you are from LAKE BLUE RIDGE. It is in North west Georgia, not far from the Tenn.-Georgia border. The lake is huge and crystal clear. If you get a chance and have a small jon boat, you will kill the small mouth and walleye, thats right walleye!! I caught some of the largest small mouth and walleye on spinnerbaits there. Is a GREAT place to fish, and who knows, may not be far from you.

yeah, I've heard of walleye being taken up north.. exellent suggestion.
I have a mini bass boat with a 55 lb thrust trolling motor. It's not much, but it is enough for the 50 acre water I live on now. I doubt it's enough for Blue Ridge... maybe the coves. It looks to be a fairly large reservoir. I am actually going on vacation in a week, and this may be the destination.

Sadly, I don't live very close to it, I'm south of it quite a distance. Smallmouth bass and walleye sounds good, though.

Any pike in there?
