Which lake Monticello is this Bob???? Is it the one in Arkansas???? I know what ya mean about being 9lbs and not even a keeper. The KEEPERS in this lake are well over 10...........with a length limit of gotta be 21" or better.....used to be 24" or better.

This wasn't my biggest LM, I'll see if I can dig up that thread as well. As for Smallies, that exactly what I have a little ole 1lb maybe 1.5lbs if I was lucky. Never got much opportunity to fish for them. Lizards

My personal best was a pair of twins i hooked up with on the internet and met in nY for a weekend
largemouth was 8.23 lbs fishing with denny at middlefork, up till then it had been several 6 lb ers from ky lake. Funny thing is all 3 fell victim to Renegade 3/8 chartruse / white spinnerbait, with painted blades that had shad image on them, with a Kalins lemon chiffone (chartruse n white) grub Smallmouth, probably a day of 4-5 pounders at lake erie on grubs, middle bass island in the spring spotted, I 've seen a 4.5 spot that was pre spawn, full of eggs at a redman tourney i was at in april at ky lake, but my pb is about a 2 lb spot. I still remember everything about landing all of em, i bet everyone else does to on their bp....the big one was caught at 5:15 on july 6th in the morning, denny and me were throwin in the dark when it hit. |

Is that the little lake down near Magnolia, AR? If it is, that is a pretty little lake. Earlier this year, I spent a lot of time over at Magnolia visiting one of my suppliers (AMFUEL, American Fuel Cell and Coated Fabrics).

No, your talking about Millwood. It's very similar though but Monticello is located in Southeast Arkansas. Those two lakes are ranked first and second as far as the chances for giving up a state record. I know monticello has produced atleast one bass over the record (by almost 2 pounds!!!) but it was taken illegally and therefore is not recognized officially. As for which is best, that depends on who you ask. I've never fished Millwood, but since i'm only 10 minutes from Monticello, i don't really see a reason to. I figure my best bet is to learn every inch of monticello and fish it until i break the record. So far I've had several fish that were "uncontrollable"...meaning fighting them was like tying to a truck bumper and in a lake with as much timber as monticello has, it becomes nearly impossible to land them.

Nope I know where Millwood is (just northwest of Texarkana). I remembered the lake I was thinking of, it's called Lake Columbia near Stamps, AR.
Is the lake you talking about near Magnolia, AR also called Byrd lake?

No, i just thought since the names were "Millwood" and "Monticello" and since their both known for trophy fish you may have confused the two.

They're not bunched up yet. I had one bite on New Years Day, she came unplugged as i was tryin to get the net under her, but she was only about 8 or 9 probably. She was in 5 foot of water on a point with some dead lilly pads. The wind was terrible so i was only able to fish a small stretch.

Hey laser, next weekend should be good fishin at Monticello. Next week is supposed to be high temps in the 40's all week, so that should have them packed on those creek channels! Try 10-12' crankbaits. Color is not as important since your looking mainly for reaction strikes...i'd wait and see what the water clarity is. Also try working a jig right down the edge of the channel. I usually catch my fish in channels that are 14'-17' deep with surrounding water in 10'-12'. Good luck!
