Depth finders in cold weather

I have always removed my depth finders when storing the boat for the winter, but I was wondering if they would freeze up and the display crack or break if I left them onboard for the winter ? Any experiences ?

I've seen some that have had condensation build up under the glass...thats a pain

We never leave ours on there. Even when storing in the summer. Especially with the full sun it will turn the lcd screens black.

my flasher has been in the boat 16yrs.still works perfect...finder stays on all the time.i use my boat too often to be taking it off and putting it back on.i'd wear out the connectors or mount knobs....the boat stays outside year round,but it gets covered when it snows.

nothing should happen to it we usally take ours off but i forgot to last year and it is still fine this year i rembered

it doesnt hurt to take it off

it doesnt matter to use much we store our boat in a tarp garage

If your boat is covered then it "shouldn't" matter. I leave mine on the boat year round. Have had no problems.
Granted, I put my boat in a garage where it's protected from external rays.

The biggest problem I have in Cold weather, is the screen doesn't show up, meaning you can't see ths grafd lines or temp etc.., very faint.(40's or less usually) This has happended on three different ones, so I guess it's a standard issue. Perhaps if not, someone could clue me in.

I don't know about now days, but ten years ago they used to seal the lcd depth finders (this doesn't apply to flashers) with a gas inside...don't remember which gas but it was an inert gas that prevented fogging. If you leave your depth finder out over winter, because of the temprature fluctuations, the seal becomes leaky, the gas escapes and at some point you start having fogging issues. I know it happened to my lowrance x-70a and had to send it in to get it repaired. I'm sure they still have to use the gas.
