Frayed Trolling Motor Cable

I had some problems with my trolling motor on the lake today, the plastic housing that holds the gears, etc... on top broke in half. As a result, I lost steering and had to pack it in early.

When I got it home and inspected the damage, I noticed that the steering cable is slightly frayed near the spool on top of the shaft. I trimmed off the frayed ends, but am now wondering how long I have until I have to replace it. Has anyone else encountered this and if so, do you recommend replacing the cable right away, or do I have some time?

The motor is a Minn Kota Maxxum 74

I can replace the housing on my own. If the cable has to be replaced however, I'm pretty sure I'll have to take it to a repair man which is probably very expensive.

I would just go ahead and get the cable replaced while you are at it. That way you know it's out of the way and it will give you peace of mind, because you know that it's gonna go sooner or later so I would just get it over with. Just my opinion though.
