cast, let drop to disired depth, pull up rod tip sharply and quickly eqough to feel the rattle, stop, let rattle drop to desired depth (usually 1-3 seconds depending on size) and raise rod tip again.

This also works well for a short arm single spin spinnerbait, Especially at night where smallies live. Fish2win

Another method is to just stop reeling for a second and then start again, no rod action going up or down is required, however both work and as a general rule you should experiment with both methods and take note when you get a fish what method you were doing at that moment, then put that part of the puzzle together figuring out a pattern, i.e. depth, speed of retreive, did it hit on the fall? type thing
hope that helps

With the short armed single spin the hits will be on the fall 90% of the time. As you pull the bait off the bottom the blade rotates at one speed creating a vibration(noise). When you stop the pull( at the 11:00 position) and allow the bait to fall straight back down to the bottom the vibration changes as the speed and direction of the bait changes that will key the stirke. The vibration attracts ,the change in vibration triggers the strike. This retrieve actually is designed to mimic a crayfish that launches itself off the bottom in a quick tail motion than falls back to the bottom, like when it is approached by a hungry bass. The same retrieve is also deadly with a Little George or a blade bait such as a Silver Buddy. This is nothing new. I have been using it since about 1980 however it works best with smallmouth or spotted bass at night. Fish2win

Yes you can.In fact most of the time bass hit plastics on the fall. The idea with the other baits is the sound factor. Everything that moves in the water makes some type noise. In fact the underwater world of the bass is very loud.Bass have both an inner ear and a lateral line that feels (hears) vibrations. Because of this bass tend to hone in on irregular noise.A wounded minnow swims in an irregular way. That sends an easy kill message to the predatory bass. When a crawfish is spooked they will use a violent tale action to propel themselves backwards very fast. Then they will coast for a distance until they land solid. The yo-yo retrieve with a vibrating bait will attract the fish by its irregular changing sound. Every lure has to have an attracting feature and a triggering feature in its action or retrieve. Smallmouth will actually hunt gravel or rock areas trying to flush crawfish out. They will tilt there bodies and blow water into the rock in an attempt to spook a crawfish into exposing itself. Once the craw is spooked it has this type action. This retreive is not the end to all methods but can be very productive, It will at times call bass from short distances. It is a method that requires a slowed down approach. Staying in touch with the lure at all times and knowing what it is doing is paramount. The strikes often come very fast and a fast reaction is called for. It is also very important to never work the bait past where you can make a fast and effective hook set, The fish most often will strike just as the blades change vibration and the lure starst to fall. This is at the top of the pull. If you have pulled the lure past the 11:00 position you basically have nowhere to go with the setting action. The rod should be used in the 9 to 11 position or less depending on how far you want to lift the lure. This method is most effective with the short arm spinnerbait at night. In the dark bass rely on thier sence of hearing and smell more than in the daylight. There is another method that closely mimics this one. It is very popular on Kentucky and Barclay lakes . It is called power jigging. You use a heavy jig and pig, a very strong action rod. You cast the bait out to a drop. Allow it to settle to the bottom then take up the slck and jerk the lure stright up off the bottom as fast as you can. Then you allow it to fall back to the bottom on a semi slack line. Almost all hits will come as the lure falls. The heavy weight of the jig thuds or stirs up mud as it hits the bottom. Wait then repeat. This method catches lots of big bass in the summer from 10 to 25 feet deep water.
