Baitcaster selection help
I looked through a few of the most recent threads dealing with gear ratios and line recovery, but in my case, they raised more questions than answers.
I was really eyeing up the '09 BPS Pro Qualifiers that were on clearance but didn't pull the trigger in time to nab 2 of the 6.4s. The new models, as a lot of you probably already know only come in: 4.7-26" line recovery 5.2-29" line recovery. The 09 models: 6.4 26" line recovery 7.1 29" line recovery Currently, BPS still has some of the 7.1s on clearance. I need 2, one for frogs and 1 for spinnerbaits, but now I have no idea which one(s), I should get. Recommendations?

Get the 7.1:1/29" for frogs, and the 6:1 for spinnerbaits.
FYI, I think BPS messed up on the 5.2:1.

Get a abu garcia. Better reel than a bps. Wally world has them for under a 100 bucks.

I'm with Bamabassman, you could either get a Revo S or try out those Orra SX's.

Some of my first baitcasters were BPS brand and I liked them until I fished my buddies nicer reels and then I hated them. They make some decent reels like the Johnny Morris Reels, but for what you pay for them you can get and Abu, Shimano or whatever. I buy most of my reels used on BBC. I bought an Abu GArcia Skeet Reese several months ago used for $110. It is about $300 brand new. I bouught a Revo Wench for $90, and five Revo sx for $75 a piece. Take a look around before you pull the trigger. I like going to BPS to look at tackle in person, but then buy it from the internet used on a forum like BBC or somewhere like tacklewarehouse or ebay.

I may be wrong on this, but I don't think that the Revo S comes in a 7:1 ratio. I believe it is strictly a 6:4:1.
I really don't think that you can have to high of a gear ratio on your frog reel. I say this for two reasons. 1) You really need to take up slack in a hurry when frog fishing. I believe this can best be accomplished on a high gear ratio that brings in a lot of line. 2) You have a finite window where the frog is at its best. The faster you can get the bait in, the faster it will get back out there.

Apparently, I was mistaken. I was under the impression that they were closing out the '09s but they're back.
I'm gonna grab a 6.4 for spinners and a 7.1 for frogs, I guess. On the subject of NOT buying the PQ, I really wanna try these reels out and I love the price, so I'm gonna pass on Abu's. Also, I'm not real big on buying used gear. Especially when you take into account that I've never used a baitcaster. If something is wrong with it, I'd never know it Thanks for the help!

I agree for frogs, go and pick up a 7:1.
As for the new reels, unless that's a typo on their website, I'd say BPS made a big mistake. Most people don't look at line recovery and will look at those reels and say, "I wanted a faster reel than 5.2:1." and them move on to the next one. And those are still a bit slow compared to normal 6._:1 and 7._:1 reels. For spinnerbaits, I thing a normal 6.3:1 reel would be good. I'd suggest the Revo or the Daiwa Tierra. (both are 28" I believe.) BB

Yeah. The way the sales were happening on-line, I assumed they were doin' away with 'em. Apparently they just sold out of all the available models, but have them back in apparently. Yeah, the line recovery changes don't make any sense to me. At first, I assumed they made the newer spools bigger but haven't found anything to back that up. If it is a typo, it's in the catalog as well

I was reading on TT that a PQ where made by Garcia, or with there specs in mind at least, and made to fish like a revo.
But I would still say get the PQ even over the revo S. Simply because I think it will be a better casting to begin with because of the brakes. It has the knob rather than the pins. And having using both I think they're easier to adjust than the pins.

Yeah, from everything I've heard, BPS reels are made by Pflueger, which is part of Pure Fishing, just like Abu is. Just learned that recently on here haha. From everything I've read, the PQ falls somewhere in between the Revo S and the SX.

Mallen, become good friends with someone who works at BPS. Then have them buy you the PQ for 40% off.

Definitly a must here lol. But I thought they got BPS Reels for 25%? Either way it's a good way to get your gear cheaper.
