Soft plastic ingestion

Gentlemen,

Two years ago I kept a couple small bass for dinner. One of them had two different plastic baits in his belly. He had a half digested white 3 in. grub and a black and chartreuse craw worm that looked almost new in his belly. No hooks or hardware, just the baits. Ever since then I try not to throw my torn or ruined plastics in the water. Question: Do you guys think soft plastic baits would hurt a bass if ingested? Anyone else every seen that?

The first thing that I was told about bass fishing was in no way shape or form, throw old plastics into the water. They'll eat them, and they aren't for consumption. I don't know if it's horrible for them, but it's possible that they could. I know they'd hurt a human real bad if you eat one.

I don't know if it hurts them or not, but I try to not put my used plastics in the water for that very reason.

it won't hurt them directly...but what it does is makes them feel more full than they really are. Because of that, they'll eat less and lose weight and/or health will decline.

Many articles I read the Bass will regurgitate the plastic at times. I guess it all depends on if the bass has a strong stomach or not.

i thought they threw it up to, and i've filleted my share of many kinds of fish, and have never found plastics in the stomach, however I have found hooks and jigs and plastics in their mouths..
I read some sites that sell all natural bass worms and they claim a piece of plastic will get lodged and starve the bass to death.. I think they can puke up shad at will, so why not a plastic?

jb is right..
nothing pisses me off more than some one leaving a line,hook,weight,and bait in a fish.. you can tell by looking at the end of the line if it was broke or cut.. i caught a just shy of 14" bass once on a 10" worm. he had a 6" lizard and hook with no line and a 6" worm with hook weight and 2 feet of at least 20 pound braid. now it is bad enough to leave a hook in a deeply hooked fish but to leave a bait which you can easily remove and a weight with line is totaly bull crap..

i removed the baits. and took side cutters and cut the hooks -both were deep- off.. put then this bass back in the lake..

What do you do with a fish that has the hook buried down in the throat? Many say the hook will disolve. I always throw my catch back and haven't had one deeply hooked yet.

Ditto, It shouldn't be a problem.The only time I throw a soft plastic in the water is when I catch a fish and want to quickly mark the spot. I throw a 3x bait out on the surface until, I can get a marker buoy out.The 3x bait floats for a easy retreive.P N J

I once caught a bass in a small pond I frequently fish at, the amazing thing was when I pulled him in, I noticed he had a Green Weenie with a chartruse tip coming out of his anal cavitity. I fished with the Green Weenie on a regular basis on that pond, and I'm sure it was one of mine. For the most part, since then, I throw my unwanted plastics in a plastic bag at the end of the day and discard them into the trash on the boat ramp. I used to toss my old plastics in the water when I was finished with them, not any more.

i remember those guys that would tie flies, and the green weenie was one of them....
but around here the green weenie is a roboworm,
ribbed worm


bet, yours looks good, it reminds me of the big 80s-90s craze of a black worm with a colored tail, I think all 3 of these weenies could catch some bass!

There is a technique you can use to get the hook out on a deeply hooked fish. It's been posted on here a couple of times to my knowledge. I had a diagram saved on my computer but I can't find it now. I'll try to find the past posts and bump it.

I just bumped the thread to the top of the Message Boards. It's titled "Deeply Hooked Fish." Here's another link to the article.

I've used this technique quite a few times. It works pretty well. Sometimes you need to get the shank of the hook to where you can a pliers on it to pull the hook out.

JB, No I haven't.I basically stick to the 6 " worms and the 4" paddle tail.

The worm I was using back then was made locally in Redding California and sold by Gary's Pro Shop. I'm sure the guy who made the hand poured Green Weenie was just "borrowing" the name, cause I know it had been around a long time before I moved to Redding. I also want to thank you for the links, I like those worms and will have to try a few.

That same (or close to) FLY was very popular around the Redding area back when I lived up there. I knew a couple fly rod fishermen who made their own Green Weenie, it was alot smaller and looked like a dragon fly nymph, they where usually very sucessful with it too.
