What an idiot.... He deserves what ever comes his way. Two things I can't stand is a liar and a cheater. I can say with most certainty that most anglers are not cheaters..... most are definately truth stretchers. lol

What a terrible thing to happen in the bass fishing family. I know this happened a few years ago in a BASS tournament but I was hopeful it would not happen in anymore large tournaments.

Hmm...figured we'd have more responses from a fishing forum. Guessing most are too disgusted to even talk about it. I don't blame them.

What is there to say? Every walk of life has it no good low down scumbag cheaters. Even our beloved bass fishing. I "almost" feel for the guy in that by being so stupid, he has probably lost something he loves.

I wonder if he is more of a moron or a scumbag or a combination of both!!!

One of the reasons I will not fish competition. I deal with enough A##H&*#S all day , my fishing and my boat is a no A##H&#^E Zone.

You're right, Cam. I hate cheaters so much, it almost makes me sick to talk about it. This guy needs some backwoods justice done on his sorry arse. The kind where you wouldn't even THINK of cheating again. Not that he'll ever get the chance. I will forgive, because God tells me to. I will not forget.

Nothing should surprise me anymore. You are correct - there are lowlifes in all walks of life, just never thought bass fishing would see it to this extent.

I'm right there with you!

Guess this topic is just one of those things that blindsided me a bit. I've been fishing club and regional tournaments for quite a few years, and while I've heard some of the stories, I guess I never grasped that it could happen at competition with some much history and prestige. It is beyond sad.

I really could care less about what happens to this guy - it's the other people who have been associated with him over the years. Some very quality human beings are now being drug through the mud for something they had no part of.

Its sad when folks think that winning is more important then upholding morals, honor and integrity.

O it gets better.

This is the link for the play by play but here is the meat.

"We just busted a cheater. A Southern California angler was caught with lead weights in the bellies of his fish. They were found the second day during cleaning of the dead fish (they are all donated to charity) and he had the gall to try it again today."

http://www.wonews.com/Blog.aspx?id=9...20JULY%2018-21

He 100% got caught cheating but the rest of the stuff you gotta take it like Capt Phil Harries said. Fairy tails start out with “Once in a point of time” and fishing stories start out with “This aint no BS”

But I heard that his wife was at the weigh in and had to get a ride back to the hotel. What a man.<Could be a fish story? But others heard the same thing.

I was there shooting the sh_t with Velvick and his dad when the Fish and Wildlife guys came in like a swat team. I wondered what the deal was thought maybe a health related issue due to the heat. Nobody knew what was up and Velvick made a call to the TD and he said someone cheated be he would not say who. It was about that time it was obvious. (I.e. the sound of a truck pulling a fully rigged professional bass boat through a crowd as fast as he could. The TD did make the announcement but never said who it was but the word was out) Velvick said when they got back to the Hotel that afternoon the cheater was being interviewed by Johnny law. They wanted Velvicks .02 on it and he said no thanks) I don’t know Velvick but this is a special tourn to him he won it twice and set the record for biggest fish. I just started talking to him at the weigh in and again at eh awards. He knows I am friends with Scott Martin. TMI just letting you know I came about the conversations

Being that I was out of town for the past week or so, I wasn't able to follow this. It is very big news out this way.
Not only was he stuffing weights, he was adding hooks to keep them from being spit or passed.
I do think that in tournaments, we sometimes forget why we fish.
I also think that it is a slippery slope for a lot of folks. I don't think anyone starts off planning to cheat/steal prize winnings. For the most it starts with keeping a fish that we know is short, fishing an off limits spot, or pulling into the weigh station a minute or two late.

Default Poor Fish

I feel bad for the fish. OUCH!

This does not look the work of a onetime pathetic desperate man. He has been doing this for quite some time. How else would he know to add the hook? Must have had one fall out on him before.

I tell you what else I hate about this other than the fishing part. Las Vegas. As a resident here you come to know that some people think that you can come to Vegas and get away with things they would not in their home town. Well let me tell you, they through the book hard here and make examples out of the fools all the time. You have no clue how many “Big Shots” I see on a weekly basis get reduced down to crying for mommy. Heck, that’s just what I see and I don’t live the Vegas lifestyle so to speek. For example, OJ Simpson. Everyone thinks we are all drunk and at the casinos all, the time and you can do whatever you want here like the Wild West. Well I don’t think so, I say he gets to find out what it means when we say “What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas” ask our mascot.

The last pic on the right is the cheater himself

That's really low, it's a shame people don't know how to behave. DA's like that ruin it for everyone else.

Aren't lie detectors occasionally used, or at least threatened in tournaments?

No doubt this chump has been cheating for a while. What we need are metal detectors at the scales. I wish that we didn't have to use lie detectors or other devices to keep people honest. But i've always said that you can lock your doors but it'll only keep the honest people honest.

If we shot him today and someone talks about it tomorrow, would that make it the old days? Justifiable? I say yes.

Off the subject, but is that Velvick in the video? The same man that lifted a rod for a photo op that never graced his deck to pimp himself out? I couldn't sleep at night knowing I had screwed men from countless man hours of preparation and a passion for something most people never know. I wonder what his motives were to undermine a society so tight knit? Maybe greed, fame, who knows? I HAD a friend in high school that got caught staking at a local tourney. It doesn't take long for word to pass on the local level. Hart has IV'd himself mainstream doing it in an open at this level and will hopefully never be allowed to fish a tourney again.

Don't think you can put Velvick in the same breath as this guy. Pimping products that were never used is nothing new...it's been going on during every event I've ever been too. If you get a chance, go look on the decks of some of these guys boats before take off, and then "listen" to what they say they used after weigh in has concluded.

I hear you Cam, but to be that stupid about plugging it like that. He knew how much coverage he was getting. I reckon some are just better at covering it than others.
