Older reel question
I have a Shimano Bantam ProMag 100SG that my Father in law gave me a couple of years ago. Until today I have never had in major issues with it, but now the anti reverse works very intermittently.
I have taken it apart and can not find any wearing on the gear or clip that engages the anti-reverse. I know it is a dry assembly and I verified there is no oil or greese. The drag works fine as long as I hold the handle. So I am sitting in the garage scratching my head right now. I know the reel is getting on in age, and not as sexy as some of the newer ones, but I am not ready to retire it as of yet. I just put a bid in on one on e-bay to use for parts if needed. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Your talking about the anti reverse dog that catches on a gear ? If so,It should have thin metal copper peices that extend out to fit on both sides of the gear it rides on.That is not a dry system. Make sure you have tension on the thin clips that wrap around the gear and apply a light coat of oil around the gear edge to keep the clips adhered to the gear so it is in position to work properly. Thanks PnJ. I will look at it again this evening. I guess I had gotten bad info when I searched for a manual on it previoulsy. The one I found said that the the gear and clip should not have any lubricant as this would cause the clip to slip. The copper clips looked good as of last night, but I will add a little greese.

No problem.I would just add oil and see if it fixes the problem. Then as a last resort ,use grease, but I am sure the oil will do the trick. Non instant anti reverse is entirely different. They are not really comon anymore so in a way the information may have been sound advice if you had the instant anti reverse roller bearing, instead of the dog/gear system of old.I use grease very sparingly as it is a major debri/dust particle trap as Kevin already mentioned in a previous reel maintainence post.
