Retention pond 7-28-08 - snake
Well, I caught another fish at the retention pond tonight. One bite, one catch. It was another 3/4 lb LM. But I am going to limit my fishing at the pond to mornings or early evenings when it is still light out where I can see. I just about stepped on a moccasin. I stopped short of the snake by about 5 feet while walking and casting down the bank. I was lucky enough to just happen to look down and notice it. I touched it with my rod tip and it swam into the water about 10 feet and then turned around and came back to the bank. From that point on, I was jumping at every movement in the water and every blade of grass that brushed my leg. Needless to say, I whipped out the small light on my keychain and made my way back to the car and called it a night.

If I had my bb gun, it would have been a dead moccasin. I am deadly from 5 feet with my Official Red Ryder Carbine-Action Two-Hundred-Shot Range Model Air Rifle!

I was wondering when someone would catch that. In all honesty, I am fairly accurate from around 40 to 50 feet with my pump action bb rifle. I practice with it so I am confident that I can hit a non-moving moccasin in the swamp way before it ever thinks about coming into my yard.
If I am 5' feet from it, I like to have a different weapon; like a shovel or hoe. Last night was just scary. No weapon and no light. |

I have no fear of snakes when i see them. It's the surprize i get when i almost step on one that sends my heart apounding!!! Don't bother him. He won't bother you. Many snakes are more fearful of you than the other way around.

I agree. I am not that fearful of snakes either. And just like you, I only get scared when I almost step on them. A moccasin however will chase you if you enter his territory and he sees you as a threat. But once he feels the sting of the first BB, he usually tries to run.

You know I jumped this past weekend. I am fishing a new spot from shore... sitting down, and something hits my foot. I look down (just after a cast) and its a snake. Now I jumped so darn quick.
It went right on by, and I have since seen it another time, same spot... I think I am invading its home. I am wachful now. The good thing is its just a garter snake I do believe.

Well you should have grabbed it and put it on a hook. Nothing like the action of a real snake. I know that if I ever catch a small brown water snake, it is going on a hook.
Also, where would you suggest hooking a live frog so that it doesn't die too quickly? I get hundreds of small green tree frogs around my house and sometimes on my windows after a good rain. I am thinking about catching a couple and keeping them in an aquarium until I go fishing the following weekend. |

Check out this artificial frog lure. Croaking fake frog
It looks really neat and likely catches bass, but I am not dropping $25 on a lure. |
