Will This Rod Do?
I am thinking of buying a Mattlures Blugill Series Swimbait for bed fishing this upcoming season. It weighs quite a bit at 1 oz. I plan on throwing it on my TD Zillion 6'9" MH-XF Baitcast rod. Now the rod is weighted for up to 1 oz. I plan on using 12 lb P-Line CXX for the line. Do you think the rod can handle it? Especially with the hookset?

I am not sure the line can handle it. I am not sure where your fish bed but around here there is normally some grass or slop to deal with. I normally use braid with a 20lb flouro leader. the rod should be fine. |

Those Zillion rods are notoriously underrated when it comes to power. M power rods fish like MH's, MH's fish like H's, etc. In most cases, I don't like fishing the high side of the lure range on a rod, but wouldn't hesitate to on a Zillion.
Another great example is the Zillion rod designed for big swimbaits (7'4" XF F) is rated up to 2oz. Guys throw the 2-4oz baits on that stick. BB

You do realize that CXX 12 lb has the breaking of a normal 20 lb line right?

Oh boy....here we go again with the line test.
Tom, when you're bed fishing, you're not going for max casting distance, so you're not loading the rod to its limits anyway. that "1 oz" on the rod is just a guideline anyway...as it doesn't take into account casting style. You could probably FLIP 2 oz baits, you know?

Right. Plus I just read the review of my exact rod on tackletour and they said they had no problem CASTING baits 2 oz. in weight. So I guess I answered my own question lol.

Give it a go..........if it doesn't work out for you, bump up the rod length and/or power or bump up the line choice.

Should probably get a new micrometer. There is a significant difference in 12 to 15, and even more so 15 - 17 in Pline CXX.

Now, having said that - using a micrometer on line is difficult. |

Not to split hairs, but the Matts lures are at 1.75 oz (regular) and 1.9 oz (ultimate).
I do agree that your rod should be able to handle that weight when you are really focused more on pitching than casting on beds. Like others have said, your location will determine if your line is the right stuff. I often will throw the Matts on 8 lbs flouro, but in a couple of lakes I will go upto 25. One good thing about bed fishing is that if broken off, the bait is usually not far away and can be retrieved rather easily.

Remember also the hook on that lure is exposed. I don't think you need a back breaking hookset. So you should be ok.
