Default Time for my annual warning

OK, boys(and ladies)-it will be warming up in the next few weeks, and many of us will be hitting the water, so:

DON'T FORGET THE SUNSCREEN!!!!!!!!

I have an nice scar on my right shoulder where the doc carved off a basal cell carcinoma as a result of not using sunscreen. Trust me when I say the smell of your own flesh burning is not pleasant. So save yourself the cost-financial and other-and use that sunscreen. Especially you young guys that is is not too late for.

I use spray on Bullfrog. Haven't even had a slight sunburn when using it.

Just a friendly warning/reminder.

Thanks for the reminder Reb. I keep a bottle of the stuff in my tackle bag and can say that I use it often.

Iwear SPF 50 right on through the winter, even if it's cloudy! UV rays can still get to ya. The lotion will also protect you from wind burn as well!

I like the spray on ones made with alchohol, they dry fast and no need to rub them in. We also have a small key chain bottle of sun screen on the keys to the boat, just incase we forget spray on.

I had a nasty bout with basal cell carcinoma on my upper forehead a little more then a year ago. I got a 2nd chance. I never go out fishing without SP50 in my tackle bag.

Nothing, and i mean nothing pisses me off more than little kids with sunburns. Cover up your kids, nieces, nephews etc. Reapply liberally and if they complain, rub a little on their tongues! that'll shut them up!

i have a question.... if you really have to try to get sunburned do you need to wear sunsreen? Last year i tested myself and i got burned after 10 hours of fishing with no shirt on during April..... so it takes about 8-10 hours of pounding sunlight do get sunburned.............. Do i really need to worry about what you had?

Aiken,
Very few people have developed any real skin issues from a single trip or burn. The issue comes from repeated exposure. Even if you don't burn the UV is still getting to your skin. 5 days of 2 hour exposure equal the amount you did in a single day.

When Bullfrog first came out, the dive shop I worked for was one of the testing grounds. I was in and around the water for 12 hours a day, six days a week. Used that stuff religiously. The only burns I had were where I missed a spot on a shoulder or something. As far as I am concerned, there is no better sunscreen on the market, and it is in my boat year around.

Yessir, you do. It is the long term exposure that causes the problems. As stated, it won't develop from just one sunburn, but that first burn starts the damage and every additional sunburn adds to it. Besides, who enjoys a sunburn? I sure don't.

Yes and Yes.

Even if you don't burn easily, and I don't either. It's the accumulative effect of the UV rays that will dry out your skin so that it will eventually look and feel like shoe leather.

Those that only get basal cell carcinoma are lucky, as it's a non evasive form of Carcinoma that doesn't spread very quickly. However, there is no guarantee that you don't get either of the other two forms of skin cancer.

Squamous cell skin cancer is the 2nd most common form. Typically it is found on the rim of the ear, face, lips and mouth, however, it can spread to other parts of the body. Although generally more aggressive than basal cell carcinoma, this cancer is highly treatable if caught in time.

Melanoma is the most serious type of skin cancer. It has the highest death rate and is responsible for 75% of all deaths from skin cancer.

Originally, I was diagnosed with Melanoma as I had a oozing mole that looks terrible. I was sent to a surgeon to do a biopsy and had to wait nearly 14 days for the results. These were the longest 2 weeks of my life. Fortunately for me, the original diagnosis was wrong, as it turned out to be basal cell carcinoma. Don't be a fool. Protect yourself.

my dad is pale white on his legs from when he went fishing in an all white boat and had his shorts pulled up and had blisters so bad that it killed the tanning pigment in his skin.....

Wear tan pants. Besides, the fish don't care what your legs look like.

Guys, this isn't a laughing matter. Just see how funny it is to be setting opposite your doctor when he says those 3 words: You have cancer. Then you'll understand.
