Need suggestions for a wooden body for lure making.

I have a few ideas for some surface lures I'd like to fasion but I'm not sure as to what would be the best choice in the type of wood to fasion the body from. I'm pretty much rulling out balsa because it's so light weight, and I want these baits to have some weight to them for easier and longer casting. I was thinking about maybe using cedar, but I've never done this before and thought I'd ask in here as I've seen several fellas in here who make their own lures. I've checked with various lure supply outlets for a basic body I could buy, but most are balsa and also not the proportions I'm wanting.

You know Keith when I was trying to make surface baits,I was using broken drumsticks,lol...Most are made from Hickory ,or Maple and are pretty dense (depending on the type of stick...They already have a good diameter...A good broken piece could probably make 2-3 baits.And you can get them for free.Just call around music shops,or private instructors,They should have plenty laying around...My old drummer still has a box full of them.

Keith, any wooden dowels from the hardware shop should work good.

Jann's Netcraft sells Basswood blocks. I guess it's heavier than balsa, but still easy to work with. I've made a couple baits from Poplar but never got around to painting or using them.

Basswood would be my suggestion...easy to work, and once you get the finish put on, they have some weight.
