They really aren't too bad, they look tiny but they are about the size of the level wind on your reel or a very large hook eye. It can be a little difficult in low light situations though.

So I guess microguides and hollow core braid are about to become the next big "thing".

I have to admit while I doubt I will run out and buy either both are interesting concepts.

For those that have tried the microguides, what do you think the big advantages are?

This is not from experience but rather online reading. The biggest advantage of the micro guides is less overall rod weight. I could see these becoming extremely popular for those guys that throw swimbaits all day as Velvick did on Clear Lake. On top of reduced weight, they also allow a rod to be more balanced and therefore increases sensitivity. The smaller guides cut down on the amount of vibration in the line when cast, producing better straight line motion which results in longer casting distance. I think it is a really cool/interesting concept, one that we should all take seriously and not just overlook as another gimmick. Here's the article I used to study up on the new guides:

I just like that the guides project a smaller profile. I have a tight boat with a limited area for bunching my rods together, and the microguides are less likely to hang up. Also, yes they are obviously lighter.

There is a number of people who claim better casting performance with them. I think there are enough people saying that to believe it is possible to improve performance, but I find them to be a little more touchy. I am still working on that though, and will provide a more detailed post about it after my florida trip.

BTW, I dont like those particular rods, but I do wish I knew where to get the cork grips. I love how they taper into the blank.

Sand paper and patience can get you the same thing. I would use a high grit though when I got the O.D. that slim to the I.D. though. I learned this the other day sanding on the butt grip on my rod. But I had intention of cutting back past the chip, so it was no big deal, but a good lesson learned on cork integrity. They will probably be subject to chipping out when you get some age on the cork too. But for aesthetics, it looks is nice.

One potentially negative aspect of these microguides might come into play when fishing with a main line and a relatively longer leader. I wonder how the guides would fare when on occassion even conventional sized guides catch the knot where the two lines join.

I agree the aesthetics are nice with the exception of the white base color, at least to me.

Im definitely not liking all the white and decal....It looks like a saltwater rod.
I like the checks on it..except for the one in front of the reel seat.

I keep wanting to argue micro guides,I think Im gonna have to build one and see what I think.
I do know that the ''fuss'' about them at the 2010 rod builder convention was mostly just hype...However,I believe the casting contest was won by a spinning rod with micros......So who knows??

Worth checking em out,I just feel that if you run into problems with your guides..Its because they werent proper sized

Strange from what i just watched on espn, that rod didn't look anything like what Velvick was using i thought i was a loomis from the looks of it. and it defiantly wasn't white lol

I use a drill press and put the grips on a tight fitting bit. Turn the press on and use sandpaper to shape the cork. Works great with eva too.

As far as the micro guides, I really like using them although they aren't for every situation. I made a post about them not too long ago. rodnreel pretty well summed up the benefits of them.

That is one of the main situations where micros don't fare well at all. They do not pass knots well.

A spinning rod with micro guides? I don’t care for the white stick at all looks to me like you said a salt water stick or something in a closeout store etc.

I just re-watched the episode. He never used the white rod one time on any of the action shots.

And this is why I won't fish anything just because a pro endorses it. What a joke. An article about him and the "magic wand" he used to win the tourney when we was probably using a custom built rod.

You'd think if he was gonna be advertising these unmistakable white rods after the tourney, he would have at least bothered to get rods he's actually going to use that look like the ones he's going to endorse after the fact.

For me....it's not that he endorses it.....but that he shamelessly lies about it. In this day and age, they have got to assume that someone is watching them and filming at all times. To come out and tell a bold-faced lie like that just means he doesn't care if anyone knows he lied. Oh, and he never had sexual relations with that woman, not one time either.
