Ummm, yes they are, until you practice and get good enough to make them not...does that make any sense? Although everybody gets backlashes every now and then.
Go here: http://pages.infinit.net/fishing/bait101.htm This is a good start, anyway. The only thing that will really keep you from backlashing is practice, though. Keep at it, and use cheap line, in case you need to cut it. Good luck. Thanks to Reb for the link from a year ago

There is a learning curve, and EVERBODY gets backlashes, but the more you use them the less frequent they are.
