With baicasters, try an ABU in the 4600 or 5500. They don't cost that much (depending on the amount that you want to spend). They will last forever and have no more problems with backlashes then any other reel. I used to use these reels exclusively, but I've upgraded to Quantum Accurist and PT series reels.

I went the same route way back then, the abu garcia does the job, just elected for the teardrop shape down the road out of personal preference.
All the abu garica reels I had got stolen and I opted to go with a dif look is all. Other than that its a great reel to learn on if your new to baitcasting. Not sure if anyone has mentioned , but with any baitcaster you must adjust the line drop and brake with each lure that is a dif. weight. I always back off the line drop so it free falls, then start tightening it up with the lure on my line, until it finally gets to where I like it, you push your thumb on the bail, and the lure drops about 10 inches and stops. Variations of that could be no drop at all, makes some casts and see if loosening the side knob on your baitcaster(line drop) to get more distance on cast. The danger of going to far is the spool will spin too fast on a hard cast, and result in a backlash.
We all know there is a very fine line between just right and too loose!

Just a update for you people. I finally broke down and bought me a baitcaster. Got a cheap one from wolly world. Its a shakespeare baitcaster/rod combo. I hope I can learn to use it well. Thanks to all for the input in this thread. Bought me a few lures also and guess what...I am broke now...But I'm happy at the same time.

thats what i did, got a real cheap one to learn on, it didnt last too long but i learned how to use it without worrying about messing up a really expensive reel.
